22LR - CCI Quiet Solid vs CCI Quiet Segmented Ammo Test

Post by wade06 » 15 Sep 2016, 12:12 pm

I had a chance to test about 40 rounds of both CCI Quiet (Solid Lead at $8) and CCI Quiet (Segmented Copper at $14). Both shoot at about 710fps, are a lot quieter than 22LR subsonic rounds but louder that an air rifle. I have my Lithgow Crossover zeroed at 50m for CCI Standard ammo. I didn’t adjust it for this test. The results are as follows.

CCI Quiet Solid
15m – 19mm 5 shot group avg – 7mm low
25m – 36mm group avg – 23mm low
35m – 45mm group avg – 45mm low
45m – didn’t bother

CCI Quiet Segmented
15m – 12mm 5 shot group avg – 5mm low
25m – 16mm group avg – 5mm low
35m – 22mm group avg – 20mm low
45m – 29mm group avg – 55mm low (one bullet segment recovered from back layer of cardboard box, see pic below)

The CCI quiet segmented is a lot more accurate and has better trajectory than the CCI Quiet which was really surprising  . Both types of CCI ammo seem to have a similar noise level. With CCI Standard zeroed at 50m the CCI Quiet Segmented is close to zero at 20m for my 22 :D.

I liked the Winchester subsonics doing just over 1000fps.A farmhouse i was doing plumbing on had a heap of dead cars down near the brunswick river in west aust.It was on 100 acres and had properties all around. At lunch I set up a target at 30m and 60m and found the subsonics seriously accurate with open sights.dead on at 30m and 5mm low at 60m In the afternoon rabbits started coming out and I had a ball whilst digging down the side of the house and taking the odd shot out the trench. The farmer was very impressed and took 2 rabbits.A claw hammer hitting a nail makes more noise and the 42g pills dropped em like stones without bothering the others.

I shot 2 more 5 shot groups with CCI Quiet Segmented at 25m today.

It was a bit windy but the Lithgow Crossover absolutely loves it which is really impressive given its 710fps hunting ammo. I have no accuracy concerns using it on Indian Mynas at 40m-50m.... got 5 more today :D

Got pics of shooting with the CCI Standard for comparison too?

Interested to see the whole family lineup out of the same rifle.

Franc, I posted this on another thread a while ago. CCI Velocitor is next on my list to test given how well the other CCI ammo has gone.

6x CCI Standard groups of 5 shots at 50m averaged 13.5mm. Best group was 10mm. Eley HP went well (11mm group) and was better than RWS HP but the wind was getting up a bit by then.

CCI stuff seems to be the most all over the place of all the ammo.

Different test by different people, clover in 1 and inches spread in another.

An interesting way to test ammo is shooting into compressed wet newspaper. you get a good idea of expansion and penetration.
