What does 22LR ammo cost?

Post by alby » 05 Dec 2016, 4:13 pm

Hi guys,

My dumb question for the day. Been out of the game 20 years but getting back into it, will have my lithgow 22 in hand in the next week hopefully.

So yeah its been 20 years since I looked at or bought 22 ammo. What sort of prices should I be expecting to pay per brick for a reasonable hunting round and target round?

I think the cheapest I bought was bricks of Highland RX for $34 in 2014.
Most stuff seems to be around $8-18 per 50, and match stuff is $25 and more.

I used to pay $180 for 5000 of Aussie Ammo back in the '80's!

For a box of 50 22LR ammo it can cost any where from about $5 to $38 or so. Bulk ammo may be a touch less than 10c per round.

My Lithgow is good with almost everything but i mainly use CCI because it's really accurate, cheap and readily available.
CCI std is $6 per box and does consistent 10mm groups at 50m. I tried Eley match ($22) and it was no better. Lapua centre X is reported to shoot really well in the cross over.
CCI quiet ($8) is rubbish but CCI quiet segmented is great ($14). Useful out to about 40m or so.
Eley Sub HP is my main hunting round at $12... seemed to hit harder than the RWS Sub HP and was giving 10mm groups.

I haven't tried HV yet and may not now I have a 243 :-)

Cci standard velocity is $55 for 500 rounds..

HPGS sell federal bulk boxes 525 rounds for $78 for two boxes..

You have the Crossover, if it's like mine it does not like cheap ammo and you will need to step up to SK, or Eley or Lapua. At around $110 for 500..

$7 - $30 per box at my local, depending on if it's budget, practice or match quality.

Works out a bit cheaper per box if you by a brick, same as everywhere.

Try a bunch mate.

Price doesn't guarantee accuracy.

I didn't bother trying $30 boxes because frankly I'm never going to routinely pay that much for ammo so there was no point.

Tried everything from $7 to $18, practice to match quality, and in the end my Annie likes RWS Club which is $8 a box. Shoots better than other match lines which are twice the price.

Suits me just fine

First caveat the prices I'll state are in American dollars, second caveat is it depends on where in the USA you are buying the ammo. For the past 5 years 22 LR ammo has been in short supply, but that problem is easing up.

Depending on the brand and the purpose you can spend nearly a $1.00 a round, for the high quality match stuff from Eley or spend $80 and get 1,400 22 LR from Remington.
I've been asked: "How many guns do you need to have?" My answer remains the same: "One more."

I've tried a few different brands through my Lithgow and luckily for me it isn't fussy so I buy the cheaper gear, Federal American Eagle 40 gr solids pack of 500 around $47, American Eagle 38 gr hollow points $45 per 400, Winchester bushman/superspeed 37.5 gr hollow points $39 per 500.

I do not know if you get, or can get, the American gun magazine titled "GUNS AND AMMO" down in Australia. But the latest edition, January's I think, contains a good article on the testing of a wide selection of 22 rounds for accuracy. It is a really good read and quite informative, it also gives prices for the ammo tested, in American dollars.

Everyone would know the magazine name but AFAIK it's not distributed here.
