17 HMR and pelt damage

Post by jackles » 24 Nov 2013, 10:24 am

Guys,

I'm thinking about getting a rim fire to shoot for pelts.

Would like a 17 HMR for the extra range over a 22LR, but how does it do for damage on pelts with the extra velocity?

Just as clean? Or will it blow out the back on varmints?

It's still just a 20gr bullet mate, hardly a bone breaker ;)

If you really felt the need you could always get some ammo that's slightly lower velocity.

FYI I think the Federal 17gr is about 2650fps.

Where the Hornady 20gr is 2375fps.

That would wind it down a fraction for you.

I use Horandy 17gr v-max and with chest shots at 30-150m I usually cannot even find a hole, it's actually strange, sometimes not even any blood or bruising on the skin, just a dead fox and perfect pelt

.223, 22-250 and this kind of area (and up) is where it starts to get problematic.

You'll be fine with either 22LR or 17HMR.

Pelt is damaged regardless of what calibre you use, only head shots are really viable. I'd go with 17 hmr. Your going to get better performance out of that compared to a 22. Their ballistics are so extreme I'd really not trust a 22 past 50m.

This.

17HMR will comfortably give you an extra 70-80m than a .22, and better accuracy across the range.

iv got a 22 it good for what it is, but the ballistics are really extreme it definitely not a flat shooter you need a lot of practice and intuitiveness to get head shoots with it.

But cheap, just rember 17 are pricey, you might be better off with 22 just because it cost nothing to shoot it and just learn the ballistics,

friend has a Russian match grade 22 and it really impressive it groups really good at a 100m so maybe don't rule those out just yet,

I would bypass the 17 & go straight for the .22mag. That way you can run everything from 50g down to 25g hornady. The 25g are just as fast as the 17 but seem to do less damage.

Not at all, the 25g hornady shoots just as flat as the 17. They are almost the same speed. Plus it's 8g heavier! Win-win.

I know it makes a difference on varmints, but it sounds funny talking up a 25g pill for weight.

This is them, they work really well. I'm a massive fan of the .22mag so I may seem a bit one sided at times.

My quad is fantastic! But if your on a strict budget you cant go past a cz or grab one of the used Annie's that are on used guns or ozguns at the moment.

CZ's are getting a serious following these days. I seem to see more blokes shooting them than anything else.

Tough to argue with their price compared to a lot of the other rifle options I guess.
