Thet aren't cheap but they are very effective for lobbing over the top of sitting pidgeons to make them fly straight over the yop of you.

They make very little noise when fired but shoot up about 100 meters and BANG !

I'm on my second box on 12 months and almost due for another.

I think that I paid $130 for my last box.

Edit ; please be sensible with them, we don't want them banned

Yes, for scaring birds off. Would still fall under discharging a firearm in a built up area though. Something to consider if in the burbs.

that would be nice but never seen them in the shops, wouldn't use it in a nice shotgun though.
seen videos of putting titanium dust in a shotgun shell was pretty good.

The "bird fright" shells have black powder in them so be sure to clean well after using.

Used to be $8 a box from Tullamarine, the bloke who had the job of driving around the runways letting them off would hand them out like confetti until they brought in the gas cannons. New Years Eve, pump action shotgun (wouldn't fire from an auto) box of "Birdfrite" Yahoo!

The company that makes them has a monopoly so they dictate the price.

Be careful using these things, if they land before going off there is a chance of starting a fire in dry country. Aim high!

Tom Thumb cracker, 4 seconds of slow burn fuse with a bit of fuse sticking through a hole in a slug type wadd. Charged with a small amount of black powder.

The crackers are impossible to get in SA legally.

I might pull one apart when I get back home, measure it all up properly and leave the recipe here for those that can get their hands on the crackers ... legally of course.

Are fireworks legal anywhere in Oz nowadays?
There was no shortage of them when I was a kid in NT, but when we moved to WA I don't recall ever seeing them again. I knew a guy around 2000 that used to travel interstate and one thing he always made sure to bring back was big boxes of fireworks.
I know a guy here in Victoria who is a licenced pyrotechnician, so I'm fairly sure they're illegal down here.

When I was a kid I got the empty soda gas cylinders for making soda water . Think I still have that old soda bomb thing somewhere. The cylinder is a neat fit in a 12 gge shell. I drilled the neck out and filled it with black powder, put in a piece of blasting fuse , sealed it with wax and stuck it in a 12gg shell.with no shot or wad and a pinch of black.
Fired it off . sometimes it went bang up in the air like a birdfrite sometimes not.
Things we did as kid. Of course not to be recommended nows

I've pulled one apart.

Here's the basic components.

10.5 grains of smokles ball powder
19.5mm x 6mm special wadd
17mm x 43mm cracker with 4 to 5 seconds of slow burn fuse
Cracker weight = 138 grains with glue and wad.

All in a standard looking hull.

As you may be able to see, the top of the cracker is sealed with hot glue.
The wad and fuse is also glued at the base with hot glue.
