High performance low recoil cartridges

Post by harlow » 02 Dec 2013, 12:36 pm

G'day,

I haven't shot any "low recoil" factory ammo myself so making a few assumptions here, but I guess they are low recoil because they're small powder charges, right?

Low recoil but also lower velocity and power.

Are they doing anything clever with powder or bullets to get lower recoils with the same performance, or is it just less of everything as I assumed above?

They're always lower velocity/energy.

That's not to say they're useless though.

I've shot the Remington Managed-Recoil cartridges in my CZ and they shot fine.

Good accuracy, I don't have any power figures or whatever but I'm sure they'll still do the business on whatever game your hunting at a reasonable distance.

Yep.

If you're doing 'the norm' 100-200m range hunting they'll still have a decent amount of energy on target.

I tried some low-recoil hand loads in my .308 for the girlfriend.

Did some 150gr Nosler Ballistic tips with starting 2209 load.

Woeful, woeful accuracy though :(

Went back up to a higher load of 2208 and it they were back to shooting 1" groups.

Nope, nothing clever.

They're just 'low' everything across the board.
Good news, everyone!

I'd suggest doing some proper load testing with lighter pills instead of factory low recoil ammo.

I don't know what you're shooting but as an example, if you're shooting .308 and 155gr grain pills, try giving some 130gr hand loads a go.

Then you can still tailor an accurate load to your rifle for better performance, and the lighter pills will still give you an appreciable recoil reduction.
