Berger VLD 30CAL 155gr

Post by Mulder030 » 15 Jul 2017, 10:02 am

Morning Lads & ladettes,

Just wanting to find out if anyone has used the Berger projectiles (30408) 30 Cal 155 grain. I picked up a box as I am still trying to find a load that works best for my rifle. I will be loading those projectiles backed by some AR2206H behind it. (using what I have left). In my loading manuals I am not 100% confident as to which one correctly relates to this projectile.

Has anyone used these before and or be able to point me towards safe load data for these projectiles?

G'day Mulder030,
If your manuals don't list 155g projectiles, then use data for 160g and you can't go wrong. The ADI data for that weight is 43.0 starting to 46.0 max, but only ladder testing in your particular rifle will give the best load for you. As each rifle will give different performance, only individual testing in your rifle can help. For instance, 155g in my heavy Omark, using 2206H was 48.4g, well over the listed maximum but developed in my rifle safely. Must say, if you have another calibre, save the 2206H for that and load 2208 in the 308, Cheers.

Yeah wow, 48.4  I would be timid in squeezing that trigger for the first time. But as you said, work up to it.
I ended up loading 40 rounds for testing. 10 of 43.0g, 10 of 43.5g, 10 of 44g and 10 of 44.5g. I have also just invested in a OAL gauge. So was trying to be precise & consistent with that. found my maximum COAL measured 2.770" for the Omark. does that sound about right??

considering i was using the maximum OAL from the manuals and was loading to 2.810 (give or take). So to say I was surprised when I took the new projectiles that deep in the case was new for me. hahaha.

Thanks for the feedback everyone tho. Now some range time to test and I'll be happy.

Mulder,
You are about 1.5 gn under max with your loads. But O/L is complicated. Do you know how to find maximum O/L with a bullet seated against the lands?

So had a chance to get to the range this morning and thought I would post the results.
So Far, these have been my most consistent hand loads. Could be a combination of first time using the hornady OAL gauge and projectile.
These were the best results of the increasing powder groups. all shot at 100y.

Now will start the refining.
and practice not being a squid and pulling the 5th shot.

43gr is looking sweet.

If not for that slight flyer it would have been a cracking group.
