Caseless ammunition progress?

Post by Harper » 23 Aug 2017, 11:47 am

Just something that floated up in my mind recently.

Does anyone know of them making much real world progress on caseless ammunition?

I know plenty have dabbled with it, but as far as I know nothing to do with it has ever hit a store shelf?

Lots of problems with caseless ammo. One of the big ones, particularly for the military, is the brass case is a brilliant way of removing a bunch of heat from the chamber and throwing it out of the rifle. Caseless needs to find other ways of controlling chamber heat.

The Heckler & Koch G11 is a full-auto rifle which uses caseless rounds.

It's a fat, clunky bizarre thing though. Google it.

Interesting, but you'd never want one

There's too many problems with it for barely a gain.

The point was to try and save some weight by removing the brass, but created heat (as mentioned), frailty, pressure and venting gas safety issues for the operator.
