why do these do this?

hey all wondering why some bullets do this? as in have a "step" in them see pic below:?

Haven't seen that before, what is it?
Some of the Lapua bullets have a similar step in the back end of them, related to the boat tail.

sellier and bellot SPCE rounds have the cutting edge too. makes perfect holes in paper.

i use them on pigs. they work well.

I had read that they cause more tissue damage than standard round nose, with the edge there actually cutting veins, arteries, muscle fibres rather than pushing them aside like a round nose would do.

But since they're expanding bullets, teh sharp edge isn't going to be available for very long after expansion sets in.

it allows for deeper penetration before expansion from what i have seen.

Looks like an easy way to put in a 'ballistic tip' type deal for expansion without the work/cost of putting the tip it.

Just shape the projectile at the time instead.
