My .204 load of 32gn ZMax at 2400fps is perfect for close range small game, and cheap enough. It's sort of halfway between the .22WMR and the Hornet. You can shoot these loads all day without getting the barrel warm.

Bladeracer, I'm interested in this load, Im assuming it's trailboss? How accurate and what sort of range is it good for?

It gives me an easy 1MoA at 100m, I don't use it much further than that. I zero for the 24gn at 4400fps to be 30mm high at 100m and hold over for the 2400fps load which hits about 32mm low at 100m.

I tried your trailboss load bladeracer on my recent bunny jaunt...( i didnt have time to do a full test to see if i could get tighter groups)
It was under moa (tested at 100yds) but was 4" low & 1" left to the standard load, which both use 32 zmax...
I would have tried it on bunnies if holdover were the only factor...
When i get time ill try a load test & see if i get a charge that groups well & is only vertically challenged (Low with no windage shift) but i doubt ill be lucky there.

Scooter, if you reload i was going to say get a tub of trailboss & some 40gr Zmax projs & have a play in the 223, once you've got a normal load.

You'll have cheap fun...so much so that you'll be bidding against me on the next hornet that comes about...!!
(or we could team up, you distract marksman while i reach over the pailing fence & grab both of his while his back is turned)...! :o

Thanks Stix, I’ll give it a whirl.
Reckon I’ll end up with a CZ527 in .22 Hornet.

It annoys me when that happens :-)
That's why when I'm developing loads I also track where the point-of-impact moves with different charge weights.
The 80gn ELDM I just tried in the .223 tracked toward the right with every 0.5gn increase in charge weight.
I wouldn't be troubled by an inch though, I can hold for that easily enough.

if you like reloading another option to consider is 17 hornet.

My 20gr nosler tipped loads with expensive primers are 40cents (just over 10 grains of powder lol) not including brass. (50c if i wind up needing new brass every 10)
add another 10cents for the 25gr vmax. both super accurate with the 20g around 0.5 moa

imho its superior to 22h past about 100m just based on the velocity and bc. But in OZ both are really a fox only callibers. so nowhere near as versitile as the 223

223 realistically is the better option and you can make some real cheap loads with the $75 for 600 hornady super roos.

something to consider if you don't have a 17 already, most reloading and cleaning gear stuff is for 22 and up...

so i needed a new cleaning rod/kit. new powder funnel. new chamfer/debur tool ect. lots of little stuff.

and brass is $56 for 50. when loaded hornady 25gr factory ammo is $59 for 50 go figure.

Hey Scooter. Invest time and cash into learning to reload. Then you can use trailboss powder and varmint style bullets to load your 223rem down to a hot 22wmr. I run 50gn zmax bullets with trailboss behind them out of an 18" barrel for about 1850fps. A 22wmr will do that velocity with full length barrel and 40gn bullets.
My absolute max range for that load is 140m because after 110m it start dropping really quickly. Also sounds roughly as loud as 22wmr.

Thanks mate. I have the gear and do reload although I haven’t really tried reduced loads to date. As I have a .22LR and a .223Rem I will probably just load standard loads for the .223. Besides that it is a good enough excuse to get another rifle. More than likely a Hornet down the track. Thanks for the insight though mate. Much appreciated.

No worries. I tend to use the reduced loads more often than the fulls when out pest shooting. Less noise disturbs fewer pest which means more targets to hand for longer. I also have a couple of 22lr for inside 75m but can't see the point in buying and paying for 22wmr or 22hornet when i can load the 223rem to suit.

Mate that is a valid point. More than worthy of consideration. The short time I’ve been on this forum has definitely opened up my eyes to a few new ideas. Mate, thank you.

You can load .223 right down to subsonic giving you .22LR noise with jacketed bullet accuracy.
ADI list 4.0gn behind a 53gn bullet at 1040fps.
It got 1180fps out of my RAR though so I'm going to try 3.0gn and the 35gn bullet.

I also shoot a whole lot more reduced loads than full-power loads.

Yeah, but as 22lr cost half the price of my cheapest 223rem reload and don't require my time to load and prep cases, i can't see the point of loading down that far. Also, with 22lr i don't have to ferret about keeping track of my spent cases.

I consider the time spent loading them to be well worth the accuracy and range it gives you over .22LR. I still shoot a whole lot more .22LR for plinking though :-)

I collect the 22lr brass when I'm shooting targets in the paddock but I'm not rooting around looking for tiny cases after every shot i take under spot light. Neither i or any of the 1/2 dozen other property owners whose land i shoot on give a toss about a 50-200 22lr cases spread over a few hundred acres every few months for a pest cull.

I hate litter bugs so pick up as many as practical. Not all but most.

IMO, once you get below say 1700fps, easier, cheaper and better to just use 22lr ammo.

I also have a reduced load for the 223. SP 55gr doing about 2200fps.Should use it more often.

That's one of the benefits of reloading, tailored ammo and cheap too.

Has anyone done the break even analysis on buying reloading gear? Each Cartrige would be different but would be interesting to see the numbers. I recon about 500 rounds would be break even?
