I run 50gn zmax bullets with trailboss behind them out of an 18" barrel for about 1850fps. A 22wmr will do that velocity with full length barrel and 40gn bullets.
My absolute max range for that load is 140m because after 110m it start dropping really quickly. Also sounds roughly as loud as 22wmr.

You can load .223 right down to subsonic giving you .22LR noise with jacketed bullet accuracy.
ADI list 4.0gn behind a 53gn bullet at 1040fps.
It got 1180fps out of my RAR though so I'm going to try 3.0gn and the 35gn bullet.

Gwion wrote:No worries. I tend to use the reduced loads more often than the fulls when out pest shooting. Less noise disturbs fewer pest which means more targets to hand for longer. I also have a couple of 22lr for inside 75m but can't see the point in buying and paying for 22wmr or 22hornet when i can load the 223rem to suit.

I also shoot a whole lot more reduced loads than full-power loads.
It takes seconds to drop a hotter round in the chamber when required for a longer shot.

Yeah, but as 22lr cost half the price of my cheapest 223rem reload and don't require my time to load and prep cases, i can't see the point of loading down that far. Also, with 22lr i don't have to ferret about keeping track of my spent cases.

I consider the time spent loading them to be well worth the accuracy and range it gives you over .22LR. I still shoot a whole lot more .22LR for plinking though :-)
I recover all my brass including .22LR, leaving it lying around is rarely appreciated by anybody.

I collect the 22lr brass when I'm shooting targets in the paddock but I'm not rooting around looking for tiny cases after every shot i take under spot light. Neither i or any of the 1/2 dozen other property owners whose land i shoot on give a toss about a 50-200 22lr cases spread over a few hundred acres every few months for a pest cull.

I hate litter bugs so pick up as many as practical. Not all but most.

IMO, once you get below say 1700fps, easier, cheaper and better to just use 22lr ammo.

I also have a reduced load for the 223. SP 55gr doing about 2200fps.Should use it more often.

That's one of the benefits of reloading, tailored ammo and cheap too.

Has anyone done the break even analysis on buying reloading gear? Each Cartrige would be different but would be interesting to see the numbers. I recon about 500 rounds would be break even?
