What cartridge is this? (blank? starter pistol?)

Found a couple of these scattered on the ground at a campsite last time I was out.

Seen a few YouTube vids of people using these with air rifle pellets in a 22.

Me too....I'd like to try something similar with a 22 revolver cause there's some brilliantly accurate 22 cal slugs on the market.

So, that begs the question. Is a Ramset gun classed as a firearm?

As a carpenter I have used and owned Ramset fasteners, without any kind of permit.
As long as it's a captive piston I think it's considered a tool, not a firearm.
There are some designs that do function like a firearm, using gas to propel a projectile, but these are banned in Australia as far as I'm aware. Here they must use the propellant gas to move a captive piston that propels the fastener.

The original ones did require a permit. The Electricians that do the line work specifically underground cables. Before they are worked on a spike is driven into the conductors by a full load 45 blank. Its in an attempt to stop the linesman catting the wrong cable and making sure it is turned off before cutting.
I dont think the gas ones do but the ones that use a brass cartridge for fasteners into concrete probably do.

No. If in doubt check Vicpols "What is a Firearm chart" http://www.police.vic.gov.au/content.as ... t_ID=34442

Try and buy those caps I think you may have a problem without a license or special permit.

I never needed a permit in WA but I haven't had to buy any in Victoria as yet.

Looks like there all good to go. Surprises me I was sure they were taken off the general market a long time ago.

I've got a heap of the old ones if anyones in need. The loose .22 cal ones (in boxes). They were left in a factory we moved to 25 odd years ago.

Remember the original starting pistols we had at school......50yrs ago at least. They looked like a palm sized 22mm or 25mm auto. The had a slide magazine which fitted in the from the front where the barrel would have been and it held 6 of these facing upwards. AS you pulled the trigger, the magazine worked its way out the back. As I remember they were not great and mis-fired often. I think they were a 6mm cap and you bought them in a round tin, once upon a time. The only Ramset blanks I ever saw where full length 22cal. You once were able to buy these with a round ball projectile. You ran the risk of them not making it out of the barrel if the barrel was too long.

Yep, I had one of those little blank-fire guns when I was a kid. Also had the Colt Python replicas that took the same blanks but vented out the top of the cylinder and through the top strap.
