223 ammo cheap

Post by southwest shooter » 05 Apr 2018, 12:13 pm

I see Gunco are flogging off Winchester Super X 55 gr sp for $135/200 .
Why is it that every time I see ammo at a good price I need it ?
Even though I have plenty of ammo already !

Agreed it maybe cheap, however in my limited experience no where near as accurate as a hand load. I purchased some cheap Winchester ammo not so long ago and ended up pulling the last 100 rds just for the brass. It shot ok but no where near as good as the stuff I reload.

$135/200 is like double the cost of reloading 55gr, methinks.

Yes i found the exact same problem, i'm reusing all the brass and dropping in 55gr Gamekings for much better results.

However we did have fun using them up in the 7615 pumpy :D

Why not? The big shops use a different business model. They work on volumes and cheap prices, they probably like with the ammo also work on the advertising principle of lost leaders to get you into the shop. The ammo is not bought on line so it either gets your attention on line or traffic through the door. The big shop also means when you come into the shop they will have whatever else you need.
In Vic I have been into shops and not even been able to get a 30 cal brush sometimes no patches, sometimes no Hoppes. In the end I am going in less and less as it is more convenient to buy online. the postage while a issue is partly offset with fuel and mileage costs if I had to make a pure separate trip.

Coincidentally I was there last week and did pick up a box of PPU to try, since it is also inexpensive. At first I thought the scope must have shifted, so I went back to the Aussie Outback 69grain Sierras to check. Nope, just doesn't like PPU.

Wow that is bad BigBang. I don't see groups that bad even when working up a load. Either that or they were shot at 300 metres. The Aussie Outback is worth the extra dollar in your case. What rifle are you using?

if you have to factor in the new brass JS I think it is pretty much on par or cheaper.

If you want cheap .223 and are not interested in reloading then you can’t go past Hornady steel case with a 55gr SP. Out of my 24” heavy barreled Howa it shoots just under 1 moa. $27.50 for a box of 50 so $110/200. I really like it if I’m spot lighting off the back of a ute because you don’t have to worry about recovery of your brass and will a 55gr SP they still hit pretty hard out to 150m

Out of curiosity, how do Sierra Matchkings perform in the field? I like the accuracy I'm getting from the 69 grain HPBT for paper punching. Just wondering if I would be better to use the 55 grain Blitzkings though for e.g foxes or wild dogs if I ever hunt in future.

Absolutely. I suppose the moral of the story is headshots or it didn't happen. I was wondering more about whether they expand if POI was the neck, chest or shoulder, or do they go straight through like FMJ. They are nominally a hollow point but the hollow is tiny.
