Heaviest bullets for 1:9 twist .223 Rem

Post by hiyoh » 05 Jan 2014, 8:36 am

Hi guys,

This is for a mate of mine who's having some trouble with hand loading.

He's trying to find the heaviest pill he can shoot for his .223 Rem which is 1:9 twist.

He started off with some 82gr and 90gr pills but they don't seem to want to stabalize. Too heavy I guess?

What do you think the heaviest bullets that he'll be able to load for a 1:9 twist .223 Rem?

Copied this from another topic here-

About 70 grain - with a grain here or there maybe depending on the bullet.

As reference, for Sierra 77gr HPBT Matchkings they need a 1:8 twist.

For 90gr HPBT Matchkings they need a 1:6.5 twist.

Sub 70gr sounds right.
