Do you want the ladder aperture of the No.4 Mk1* or are you building something for scope use?

Go with the No.4, a lot stronger, you can put a scope on it or use the peep.

bladeracer, I was looking at building a poor mans Lee Speed or Jungle Carbine but with an Aimpoint or Halogen sight.

I'd go with the No.4 then, you can even run a conventional scope on it if you want.

If you're building a Lee Speed style sporter, the No.I will be fine in 303 or 7x57R.....for a jungle carbine style, I'd go with the No.4 to get the good peep sight.

Thanks fellas, I have now purchased a Parker Hale Standard No4 Mk1 in Excellent Condition. It appears to be Parkerized and the barrel and action are 10/10. I want to re-barrel it to 7x57R. Question is, am I destroying a decent gun by re-barrelling it?

If the bores good and it shoots, always check you can hit something with it, use it as it is. Nothing wrong with the 303, a lot of South Africans and Canadians still shoot some big animals with it.

Yes, but why replace a good, useable barrel if you dont have to? If the barrel was rooted you'd have to replace it, but if its not , you'd be wasting money....7mm barrel cost, fitting, chambering, all the bits add up....$$$$$.....if the rifle's in good shape, there's nothing wrong with the 303. The No.4 is an extremely robust action and can stoke up the 303 pretty well.
If you still want a 7x57R, you can get an old No.I action for bugger all around the traps and build a real nice stalking rifle out of it.

Decisions , decisions stoney. If there’s no modification to the action , receiver or mag , you’d only be up for the cost of a barrel. Allan swan does his under $600 fitted. But, can 7x57 do what 303 can’t ? :unknown:

You have a rifle, now is the time to think some of these questions through.
Does it shoot acceptably well as is?
You perhaps paid $400 - $500 for it as is, after adding the cost of a new barrel at $600 - $700 do you really think you will have a $1000 - $1200 rifle?
Do you think fashions and your tastes might not change?
In my case I spent near $2k on building a custom stocked #4 still in 303. It now occupies a space at the very rear of my safe where it will stay because I am aware of the 'kick in the guts' that is coming when the time comes to sell.

Straightshooter, I'd like to see what two grand looks like in a 303.....any pics??

I just spent $500 on a Pac-Nor 405 barrel for my Siamese, traded the fit-up work for some welding jobs, and will most likely have to pay at least another five hundred plus to get Gordon to cut me a G&H style blank for it, so it doesn't take long to rack up the dollars......

Thanks Roger, you are truly the voice of reason. My .303 Sensei :D . Although, I definitely think you should lend me that beautiful rifle to ensure your theory is correct. ;)

G'day straightshooter, I know I could probably buy a new rifle for far cheaper after the intended upgrades. But...….this is something I have always wanted to do. I would lose money in the current market but, I am not building for investment. I would love to see your rifle mate. :drinks:

There's a lot of scope for the use of the No1 & 4 actions.
Aside from the normal 303 chambering in both actions, there have been a number of different chamberings from 22Hornet through to bigger thumpers. The No4 lends itself well to the 45-70 cartridge. An easier option is the 303 based wildcats from 224 thru to 375.

I have a 303-25 on a No1 MkIII action and it is a great fast handling 10rd rifle for probably 80% of game here in Aust.

I also have a full blown custom in 375Nitro Express flanged 2.5" which is built on a Lee Speed action. Basically a No1 MkI action which was refined and on sold after sourcing from the British MoD arms firms.

The reasoning behind building a rifle such as you're considering, is not because of cheaper cost, as it certainly won't be! It is more because you want something unique, something that you've been involved in bringing into existence. As such, cost is irrelevant in my opinion.

....what he said.... .....you can actually go up to 416 if you want to in the 303 case !!

Roger

.....I've got the 7x57R, 257 Rob.R ( 303-25 on mauser case ) the 375 FL NE and the good old 303....nothing on this continent they won't bring down, it just comes down to personal choice

Hi Stoney, I know it's two years after your post but did you re-barrel the PH Standard or leave it 303? Just curious as the PH 303s are fantastic and a great piece of history. Do you still have it? Thanks, Bruce

G'day Bruce,
Sorry I didn't get back to you. I re-barreled a Savage 303 to 7x57R, not my PH .303. viewtopic.php?f=13&t=12588
