Boyd’s or Bell & Carlson

Post by Toppy91 » 16 Sep 2018, 5:13 pm

Hey guys. So I took the howa 1500 to the range for the first time today. While I am happy with the accuracy so far I don’t like the stock flex I get. Tossing up between a Boyd’s stock or Varmint style Bell and Carlson. I like the idea of the internal alloy bedding on the B & C. Any advice would be great!

bell and co seem good on build, but on looks i like boyds lam stocks. plenty of people seem to do well with boyds. my ruger scout has a boyds as standard and the extra weight of the lam stock helps tame recoil. seems very well made a durable . dunno about the weight of the bells, if ya lugging it round a paddock or bench shooting should be a consideration i guess

Thanks mate. I’m not concerned about weight as it is 99% target shooting. I’m not crazy about a lot of the lam stock designs from Boyd’s unfortunately

I have a Boyds thumbhole, it is a really great design just slippery. I added some stippling to help grip it.

You will find alloy bedding blocks get all polished up after a bit of recoil. Best to get traditional dev on bedding on either stock. You can get a Sinclairs three in fore end adapter so it will sit on your front rest for shooting off the bench.

You could also get some stock stabilisation goop from Nathan Forster in NZ to treat your existing Flexi stock.

or just use some fibreglass filler to stabilise the forearm

but I would just go the bell and carlson

I have a B&C 9 lug varmint on my Weatherby, works really well on the big boomer. Not sure if that design is available for a Howa. I can shoot it prone without getting beaten up too badly.
