Walnut stock timber grades?

Post by eeckle » 14 Jan 2014, 10:38 am

Hi guys,

Hoping someone can tell me what the grades mean when they say "Grade 3 Walnut" or whatever the number is for the stock.

Thanks.

We had our floors done a while ago and the grade of wood was to do with how many imperfections were in the wood.

Things like bird pecks or knots in the timber.

Presumably it's the same?

Low grade stuff would be anything with bark pockets, big knots, bird pecks, that kind of stuff...

That wouldn't make it into a nice stock.
Reach out and touch...

There are other things too which art actual flaws in the structure of the wood either.

Things like burls which which discolour the wood but aren't a hole or weak point.

Mineral streaks come up in timber too sometimes so you get black and green streaks through it, but the timber is still strong and whole.

Some of those streaks are what make a stock.

When you get one with that real dark heartwood and light sapwood and a nice dark stain... Beauty!

The problem I have seen each stock maker / timber supplier grades the timber differently. The best person to chat to about timber grades is Roger Vardy http://www.rogervardystockwood.com he also has a very good web site with photos of each piece of timber thats for sale.

Looks good to me, reddog.

Like Aster, I reckon those dark heartwood steaks look nice.
