Extending the chequering of a rifle grip myself?

Post by Grated » 25 Jul 2013, 1:53 pm

Hi Team,

I have a rifle with a walnut stock. I'm a pretty small guy and where my hand naturally sits on the stock (fore end, not the trigger hand) it's half on/off the factory chequering of the stock.

I've looked up a few youtube vids on chequering rifle stocks, I see you just need the tools (whatever they're called) which are like little rakes/chisels, and you just line them up in existing groves and rock them back and forth to start on new ones... if that makes sense?

Seems easy enough when the pros are doing it in the vids. Reckon this is something an average Joe can attempt at home? Or is there something to it that I'm not seeing and likely to muck up?

Cheers.

:D

Seriously though... It's getting the first line down that's the trick.

I'm not sure what was in the videos you watched, but to start you put down a single grove with a 1 blade tool to create a guide.

Once that's done, you switch to a 3 or 5 blade tool, and use the centre blade on the 1st line you did and guide the tool along to create the extra ones. And you just move the tool left/right as required and used the furthest lines and your guides to expand out.

Once you've got your first line in, filling out the rest is easy - just take your time starting and with your border too, as that's where you'll likely slip and create some big scratch on your walnut.
