Keeping scope on target with a .308 muzzle brake

Post by maxi » 23 Jan 2014, 10:38 am

Hi guys,

I know guys put muzzle brakes on small calibres like .223 or even .22 to reduce muzzle jump and keep the scope on target so they can see the bullet hit the paper.

Is it too much to hope for that you could achieve the same with a .308?

I'm thinking for a 'regular' rifle with maybe a semi-heavy barrel, but not a heavy bench rifle.

Hmm?

I've shot a few braked 308 and win mags and I think that's going to be asking a bit much.

With the right balance of magnification to be zoomed out enough that you don't lose sight of it, but close enough to clearly see the hole impact, you might find the sweet spot.

I wouldn't expect to just chuck a brake on and see every shot perfectly though.

Not enough in my experience.

I shoot a Remington VTR with the inbuilt break and it really takes the rise out of it, and the recoil, but it's still enough to not see the bullet impact. Only afterwards...

Do it with anything other than a heavy bench rifle, I don't think you're going to get quite the result you want.

There will still be too much jump IMO.

No worries guys.

Not the answer I was hoping for but thems the breaks.

I'm still going to give a brake a try. A little less recoil never hurt anyone ;)
