.303 overly light trigger

Post by valkyrie » 17 Mar 2019, 3:17 pm

Hi all.
Recently got my hands on a mk 1* long lee from 1902. Someone in the past has lightened the trigger by filing down the sear engagement to the point that if you dont cycle the bolt while also pushing down on the back of it, the striker will slip over the sear and have to be cocked manually.
Just wondering if anyone has an easy fix or advice on how to resolve the issue

The smle has a different trigger to the long lee and so isn't compatible

Sorry, I just posted that as an example.
Are Long Lee triggers available?

An alternative might be to weld it up, reshape it, and retemper it.

If they're simple shapes like the SMLE it'd be pretty easy to make new ones from scratch as well.

Parts are almost always available at the various gunshows, I don't know what the show schedule is for SA but there is one here in Melbourne on the 14th of April and one of us could pick one up and mail it to you if needed. Would need to confirm exactly which type of sear you have, as a lot of re-fitting occurred over the decades and I have seen SMLE trigger/sear combinations fitted to MLE Mk1*. So is yours the "cup and ball" style engagement of trigger end and sear? A picture would help immensely. The other alternative is to buy one from Lawrance Ordnance and pay the $55 he is asking for Long Tom sears, probably pay not much less than that at the gunshow, hard to say but sometimes I have seen them as low as $20, Cheers.

There is a village in Pakistan that can make a SMLE from scratch with hand tools, perhaps ask them to make your trigger parts.

valkyrie,

I have quite a few few spare Lee-Enfield parts on hand, though without a photo, I dont know what to look for.

If you can upload an image of the sear, I might possibly have one for you.

Cheers,

Rod.
