Looking for Gunsmith

Post by Die Judicii » 07 Feb 2014, 6:47 pm

Hi,
Can someone point me in the right direction, to a reputable Gunsmith in the Toowoomba region ?

Preferably one that doesnt charge like a solicitor, and one that actually gets a good result.

Cheers

There are a few gunsmiths around Toowoomba, and Brisbane's not far off. I think you'll find, with gunsmithing, you pay for what you get. If you want the job done right, save your pennies. If you want a bodge job, give it to a mate or do it yourself...

It seems you have so far not received a reasonable honest reply.

What do you want a "reputable" Gunsmith to do in the way of work....?? That maybe something you need to qualify.

If it's just some quality work then there are probably a few but if you want high grade precision benchrest quality work, that comes with a reasonable price I would suggest Redback Precision.. Look at the BRT site for contact information.

But, the likes of Phil will not waste his time and has stated this looking / playing / fixing something like a modern day Remington 700. Hence why I say "what do you want done" ....???

Your local Gun Shop should have access to a Gunsmith for general jobs. They may not even tell you who.

Yep.

Some guys don't do all kinds of work. Or specialise in some things etc.

Or will only do the work on certain firearms.

Hi "brisb" and "Apollo"
Thanks for your replys, I found them tonite by accident as I long ago gave up waiting for a reply.
What I need doing is to "slick" up the action of one of my rifles.
I bought it new, and have fired approx. 4 boxes of 20 through it, and it is still rather tight in the initial act of opening the breech immediately after each shot.
I would also like to get the trigger lightened a tad more than it is.
I now also have yet another job that also requires a gun smith.
See separate post re Savage U/O combination.
Cheers

What breed fo rifle....????

Sounds like a general gunsmith job and have you asked your local Gun Shop. No idea where you are.

Redback Precision would probably not be interested in doing general gunsmith work. If you mention a general area maybe someone can offer up some contacts.

The Savage U/O Combo, have you read the Owners Manual. Seems there might be some trick with the Cross Lock / Pull Trigger trick and maybe something to do with the Hammer by reading through.

Hi Apollo,

The rifle I need "slicking up" is a pre Remington takeover Marlin XLR 336.

And before anyone asks if there are metal filings inside it, the answer is NO.

I have stripped it several times, and it was A1 clean.

I don't care if a "general gunsmith" gets the job, I just want one that isn't a backyarder Mr Fixit that is posing as a gunsmith.

Cheers, and thanks.

Oh, and as for general area,

I can do either Warwick or Toowoomba real easy.

Okay, don't know anyone in that area myself but perhaps others do. I would still drop into the local Gun Shop and ask them plus who they use for their work.

Stored here is my mate's Marlin 336C (also pre Remington) and from new it was tight to cycle plus it copper fouled really badly which was just a rough bore. A dose or two of JB Bore Compound and a few hundred rounds and the copper fouling stopped plus the accuracy improved a lot. Action cleaned a few times and lubed with a teflon type oil, many and I mean many cycles of the action and it is now pretty smooth to operate.

The trigger has not been touched as the mate likes the way it is.

If you find a Gunsmith I'd have a talk first and find out what he can and/or cannot do that you require. He might just say to smooth the action cycling just keep cycling it to run it in further. I'm not a Gunsmith and certainly don't know much about Marlins. Did have a pretty new old Winchester 94 that was really smooth from day one and big difference cycling the two. The mate always like my Winchester until I sold it.

Sorry I couldn't help more.

Thanks Apollo,
Cycling appears to be probably the best NATURAL cure, but I guess I'm a bit impatient in my old age.
I have heard of applying something like valve grinding paste and then cycling.
I just worry in case it might get into where its not needed, or even worse, if it over does it.
Maybe just find a good movie and sit and cycle it while watching.
(Hope the little men in white coats don't look through the window while I'm doing it) Ha Ha,
Cheers

Thanks mate, I will give him a call.
Do I need a bit more info than "Allan at Pine Rivers" ??
Does he run a gun shop ?
Or what business name should I look up ?

Failing that, maybe shoot me a PM with his contact details please.
Cheers
