Shattered laminate stock

Post by veep » 10 Feb 2014, 11:21 am

This is from overhearing a conversation at my LGS so a bit fuzzy on a few details.

I was at my store this morning and another guy had brought in a laminated stock which had shattered. Big split from where the top/rear of the action would be back down through the start of the butt plate cutting the stock in half

It was from a .308 and the guy was adamant he just fired it and it came apart, didn't drop it etc. The guys at the store were obviously a bit suss on him and didn't think a .308 could do such a thing.

What do you think?

Anyone had a dud come apart under normal use?

If it was a laminated stock on a Sako I'd be pissed but if it was a $90 Boyd's I'd say I got what I paid for ;)

Difficult to comment really without knowing the full story but its possible a lamination flaw caused a weakness where the Inletting ends

I've never heard of it happening in a .308, laminate is usually pretty strong too...

Normally big game calibre rifles with timber stocks is where it happens.

It's certainly not common for a .308 to break a stock due to recoil. You're normally talking about African and big game calibres to break a healthly stock, and even with those it's hardly a daily occurrence.

Like Chronos said, without knowing the particulars who can say...

He could have dropped it not be admitting it on the hopes of getting a free replacement.

Shooting rests like the Caldwell Lead Sled have been known to break a couple of stocks because they don't allow any backward movement and all the recoil is absorbed but the stock, but again, for a .308 that's not likely.

Or it could have been a flaw between the layers of laminate.

In any case, it's very uncommon. I wouldn't be worrying about your .308 suddenly coming apart if that's your concern.

Yeah, I think not.

Only a few million of them fired every day without problems ;)

Happened a while ago at my local.

I forget now but I think he was shooting something a bit interesting like .450 Dakota?

Sighting in a new scope and after 5-6... *CRACK* !

Action went one way, the stock went the other.

Only about 4x more recoil than a .308 there though :P

You're not wrong.

Shooting that kind of calibre stuff isn't really my game, but to each his own.
