Sanding back a laminate stock?

Post by Humir » 27 Jul 2013, 2:11 pm

Hi guys,

Looking to do a little fixing up on a laminate stock.

Nothing to fancy... There are just a few places where it has got modest scratches which have created sharp little burrs along the grip and some on the butt.

Just want to sand them down with a pass or two to smooth everything out.

What do do after though? As above, the stock is laminate not wood... Do I need to oil or coat or....something? the area where I have sanded?

Cheers.

If you're just taking off minor burs and not actually taking the top layer off the stock, I wouldn't worry about it at all.

You wouldn't be sanding deep enough to need any special treatment after.

Laminate isn't like walnut where you're sanding off a protective coating to expose raw wood.

It's laminated all the way through.

A coat of your regular oil (or whatever you use) over the sanded area as part of your regular cleaning routine should be fine.

Thanks all.

I won't be sanding deep so sounds like a coat of the regular cleaning stuff will do the trick.

It should be fine... I sanded out a laminate stock to float a barrel, and finished it off with 2000 grit paper to smooth it out.

The finish was good enough that I didn't feel it needed anything else... I just wiped an oiled cloth across it and it looked good as new.

I pretty much followed your routine, Aussier.

Slightly different looking finish on the area, but smooth as silk. Happy with how it turned out.
