My experience with bore cleaning

My 2cents worth...

First up - pass half dozen patches with carbon remover (brake cleaner ) through bore - from breech to muzzle only (dont drag a carbon fouled patch back thru the bore)
Secondly - use Bore Tech Eliminator with a nylon brush - saturate it with solvent - 20-30 strokes through the bore - let it sit for 20 mins - patch out .
Examine muzzle - if copper streaks exist - use Boretech copper solvent OR KG12 on a patch - let it sit 30 mins intermittently scrubbing with a nylon brush - patch out.

Copper should be gone ...if not repeat the Copper solvent/KG12 step till it is.

If i could hook up a camera to my hawkeye borescope i would and make a video. Is cleanliness of barrel equal to accuracy? Do you really need to get barrel back to bare metal?

What I have learnt.

C4+ carbon cleaner gets rid of all powder and and some carbon.
KG12 gets rid of copper streaks even if you don't scrub.
Getting rid of baked on carbon requires bore paste.

No scrubbing and you can see copper dissolve. You won't see boretech cu2+ do this.

I have not used KG12 and no doubt it removes copper but in my experience Boretech Cu will remove copper in the same way. Do you feel like setting up your camera with a copper streak and some Boretech?

It is interesting when a company conducts their own research, the data shows the Ballistol lubricant as being three times more effective than Boretech despite it not being a copper solvent.

Thanks for posting the information however, I will look out for the KG product and give it a go.

Ballistol is a great product - more of an all-rounder and one which i use for cleaning and lubrication. It certainly wont harm the bore and would remove powder fouling . For field use its a good choice.
But for proper cleaning i use products which i have trust in - and i have used pretty well everything on the market.
For me , its Bore-Tech, KG and Pro-shot.

I use the KG12 and it works great. Just a warning to others though if you have not read the MSDS it is pure Cyanide its not going to kill you but it is a chemical that should be given a bit more respect than other bore cleaners wash hands well after use.

Mmmmm,,, just checked LESS THAN 3% Cyanide. Still, treat it with respect.

Edit, You cant generally buy that type of stuff without some sort of licence. (Dependent on concentration) Its heavily regulated.

Yes I shouldn't have used the word pure. The other ingredient is water. Im not sure if I have the Boretech MSDS I probable do as I went through the exercise of comparing them all. They were mostly all the same with very little active ingredient in them.

Working in chemistry (research) area with MDSD's aplenty you would think i would look into what cleaning solvents contain what....

Cyanide (<5%) in KG12 - this made my immediately bin the stuff. Having used it sparingly in the past (without any gloves!!) - bugger me.

I think i may look to use disposable gloves from now on when cleaning rifles.

The level of cyanide in the KG12 could pose a problem with long term use - you would think the packing would alert you to use PPE of some sort.

Will stick to the Boretech gear from now on.

at the end of the season, around 6-8 months, maybe 20 shots unless l think it really needs it

Sooo... just thought i would regurgitate this thread. Normally for just cleaning carbon/soot out of my centre fires I just use eds red so I bought some of this carby cleaner from Supercheap Auto last week thought id give it a crack. Turns out the bores weren't as clean as I thought. Yesterday I spent 3 hours cleaning 2 and today I'm spent about another 2 hours cleaning out another. Plenty of carbon crap material is still coming out so give this stuff ago. Seems better than eds red can't speak much about other carbon cleaners.

Use sweets for copper once a year.

P.S. I clean my rifles almost every time i use them so am assuming they were cleaned after last use.

Carby cleaner is very effective on carbon. Good for cleaning throttle bodies too.

I bought same brand brake cleaner for same purpose.

I briefly tried to find out what the active ingredients are in carby & brake cleaner, but couldnt find anything.

Asking a few people in shops, it was suggested that brake cleaner would be better for baked on carbon, but the suggestion didnt come with any scientific backing....its just based on assuming brakes would get hotter than a carby.

I even asked a manufacturor & no one could tell me the active ingredients so i dont know which one is better for baked on carbon.

This SCA brake cleaner is no good for painted surfaces & rubber parts...so obviously cant do timber stocks any good...so being paranoid i walk out the room to spray the patch...lol

Is the carby cleaner also bad for paint & rubber OldBloke...?
