Attaching open sights to modern rifles

Post by CAVEMAN » 02 Nov 2019, 7:31 pm

I have a Ruger scout that came out of the box with factory fitted open sights and there quite a fun thing to use, and would seem to have a fairly practical application.

But seeing as it is a rarity in today's market and the only rifles i can find that typically have fixed open sights are come of your higher end rifles and European manufacturers such as CZ. Has anyone had a set of sights installed onto there basic rifles that we see today. The likes of the Howa's, Ruger or remingtons.

If you have was it a big job for yourself or a smith and did it leave you with a good result?

It's really only the front sight that's difficult, rear sights will mount on whatever scope mount it has, dovetail or pic rails. A rail will let you carry the rear sight separately if you prefer and just put it on when you remove the scope, without affecting zerom

Front sights can be bought that clamp around the barrel if you want to do it yourself. otherwise a ramp screwed onto the barrel is the simplest. You can get ramps with fixed sights or with dovetails so you can put a variety of sights onto the ramp.

Have a look at Brownells' selection of sights to see if there's something you like.

I also mounted M16A2 sights on my Ruger Precision Rimfire which are very nice.

I've had iron sights fitted to 4 of my rifles. The Smith charges $30 a go.

Are they just the drill and tap style onto the barrel? And have any pictures of them.

That's a good setup especially with the adjust ability of stock M16 sights. Good open sights are really becoming a piece of history making way to cheap and effective optics.

It does seem if you do go a big safari caliber there still in vogue. But those are some damn classy lumps of steel and timber, where did we go wrong.
