Left handed boyd's stocks

Post by ben_bass69 » 24 Feb 2014, 10:32 am

Hi Guys, first post on here.

I'm looking at putting together a Howa 1500 in .204R using a Boyd's thumbhole stock.
The only problem with this is I can't find anybody in Australia who is advertising the stock in left handed...

I looked at buying one direct from Boyd's but they have a weird law about selling stocks worth more than $100 to international buyers

"We cannot ship product valued over $100 out of the United States and any international orders over the $100.00 limit will be cancelled.
NOTE: This is the value of the product only - does not refer to freight charges."

Does anybody know of anyone in Australia who would have any left handed stocks or could get one?

Buying the action is probably the easiest part, lots of places offer the .204 action with the varmint barrel for a pretty reasonable price. I'm going to free float the barrel and lighten the trigger to hopefully make a good accurate fox rifle for spotlighting.

Hi Ben,

The $100 limit isn't Boyds being weird. That's the US ITAR laws which prevent them from shipping them.

Not US suppliers can ship this stuff if valued over $100 which is why a bunch of their stuff is (or was?) $99.

I see that stock is $109 though. If that's the declared price it can't be sent :(

You could always ask them to take $10 off the price and add $10 to the shipping?

Hey Ben,

If you are going to shoot .204, start looking for Sierra 39gr Blitzkings, they are hard to come by.
40 gr V Max are good, but not as accurate as Sierras, I.M.O.
Try Safariland Firearms and Bankstown gunshop, they did have some a while back.

Grrr, I can't remember who it is at the moment. When it clicks I'll post back but there are stores here which sell 'em...

About $299 retail here though if I remember right.

Usurper - That'd be great mate, cheers!

Hardcast - As yet I haven't really looked into ammo much, from what I hear the .204 ammo can be a bit hard to get sometimes?

Grrzrr - Depending on availability here in Australia I might have to look into that!

Carter - Yeah, $109 for the three base colours then extra for any custom options. $15 for another colour, $25 to alter the LOP, $12 to $71 for a different pad, $20 for engraving...

Being from Ballarat i'm thinking of getting Kevin Wright to put it all together, I hear he's pretty good?

Here's a place from your neck of the woods, Ben.

Boyds Varmint Thumbhole How Stocks @ Clayton Firearms

No lefties pictured but surely they'd get one in for you. I think I remember from other conversations a couple of the VIC boys had got left handed stocks from them... Give them a call anyway.

Any luck with getting them to charge extra shipping and less for the stock itself?

Maybe email Boyds in the states and ask if they have an Australian distributor they can give you the number for.

Might save you a lot of running around.

I haaaate that when sites don't put their contact details on their website.

Don't ask me what the logic in making it difficult for your customers to contact you is, but there you go.

I'm taking the easy (but more expensive option now), Boyd's won't reply to emails so i'm going to get a custom made stock from Ken Noye, he's quoted me $560 for a thumbhole stock made to fit me. I'll be getting Pete Van Meurs to put it together for me also.

Sucks that Boyd's won't reply.

I hate it when businesses are going good that they will start ignoring or dismissing potential customers because they're not hungry for the business.

Poor form.

Ben I have one of Ken's stocks on my Rem700 SA that PVM re barrelled and trued the action, I'm very happy with it. I'll be chatting to PVM soon as I'm looking at building a 17FB on a CZ527 action and want Ken to make a stock out of black heart sassafras.

Yeah, both of those guys have a very good name with the target shooters, can't see any problems with them building me a hunting rifle!
