Fluting a stock?

Post by bawoog » 28 Feb 2014, 11:01 am

Hi,

Kind of a thinking out loud idea here only so be kind

I wonder has anyone some something along the lines of fluting a rifle stock?

With thin grooves the length of the stock I should think it would still be nice enough to grip, and if you can knock off 10% of the weight it would be a win.

Same for the butt plate? Seems like bit could go there without any loss?

Idea got some legs? or stupid?

I'm looking at adding weight to my gun, you want to make yours lighter.

It's a funny old world isn't it? Lol

It's an interesting idea although timber is about 15 times lighter than steel do you'd have to remove a ship load of wood to make any significant weight saving

In theory sure, in practice though I'm not convinced.

I'd be seriously surprised if you could lose 10% of the weight from a few grooves down the length.

Without compromising the stock anyway...

Is that adding weight to your sporter or bench rifle, Chronos?

Could be problematic for heavy recoiling rifles too maybe?

Weaker stock... eventually broken stock?

I shoot a tikka varmint which is quite muzzle heavy with the synthetic stock, i've made a lead shot bag that fits inside the butt of the rifle, bringing the balance point from infront of the magazine to just under it

Nice idea, I'm thinking it would be prohibitively expensive to do well though.

Having someone mill out a contoured pattern around the stock etc. couldn't be cheap?

I reckon you could afford to lose a little wait in the butt though, you're stock isn't going to break from recoil unless you're shooting something huge IMO.

The normal stuff - .308 etc.- wouldn't be enough kick to cause any problems here I don't think.
