Fixing chips on cerakote

Post by creet » 07 Mar 2014, 2:37 pm

Hi,

Can anyone tell me if it's possible to fix chips on cerakote?

Is there any kind of patch work that can be done to seal the chip and prevent more of the cerakote peeling away or is a another complete dip needed?

Thanks.

There is no patch cerakote as far as I know. As you said, it's a coating which works best when there are no edges to pull up. You can't just dab on a brush work of cerakote and let it dry or anything like that.

It would be a bit of a funny finish, but you could seal the spot with a fine layer of epoxy or something like that? It might look a bit odd but would protect the edges from further chipping.

Nope, a strip and recoat will be required if you want it perfect again.

There is a ceramic repair compound you can use on bath tubs and basins and the like. It's a paste you put on the surface, let it harden and sand it back with a fine emery. This stuff sets harder than rock, so as long as you prepare the surface correctly, it may work. You can get it at bunnings or hardware stores pretty cheap in a tube.

Epoxy steel could work as well maybe? Try it on another piece of steel or stainless to see if the results are acceptable. Let us know if it works! :)

I tell you, I don't fancy sanding back that epoxy steel stuff with a hand file.

You'd need to take a week of work to get it done

I tried a couple of things by just painting them on spare bits of steel. Pretty much just looked like I'd tried to fix it with liquid paper though

A blob of stuff on there smoothed out... Too difficult to sand the harder ones back with any quality finish. For me anyway.

Oh well, suspected as much but you gotta try.

I guess that's kinda what you want anyway, something that's going to be just as hard as the Cerakote to remove. A good file should do it, or take your time with fine emery and a block of wood.

Also, you could you mix a small amount of paint or something with the ceramic repair compound to match the colour? Just a thought.

Yeah it would do the job, just not pretty and mucks up the feel a bit I guess.

No worries, might be one to just save the pennies and bite the bullet, get it done properly a bit later.
