BSA 222 rifle bedding Job.

Post by AZZA'S HJ47 » 12 Apr 2020, 9:27 pm

So decided with all the Covid 19 crud and inability to go out and have a plink to do some gun related work/maintenance I had wanted to do a bedding job on the 222 after getting the rifle done and cerakoted. Just thought id throw a thread up for those that may be interested or tossing up the idea of giving a rifle bedding job a go.

The previous owner of the rifle had bedded the rifle however i don't know what he had used and after a little inspection and deliberation decided to start again. The rifle has shot well after the barrel was replaced By Alan Swan Gunsmiting. The rifle was fortunate enough to provide me with my first Red deer at a distance of roughly 150m.

Whilst my groups have always been around the 3/4 to half inch groupings @ 100m I figured what do i have to loose.

I dont know if this is the best way of doing it through. The howa that i have in 308 with one of those horid houge stocks i did in the same mannor and it ended up working a treat.

Big tip i learnt from the last stock that I did masking tape works wonders for preventing scratches who says you dont learn things when your older lol.

hey azza, i've bedded a couple of my rifles and a dremel tool is a very useful bit of gear . i've used it for lots of little gun smith jobs as well . i tape up the stock edges with the green non-stick painters masking tape , stops stock damage and compound sticking where you don't want it . and ordirnary carnuba car wax makes a good release agent to stop any metal sticking to the bedding compound . i put it on the receiver bolts when setting the action in the compound , that's the last thing i would want to stick . the green acraglass is what i use, it's not as runny as the red packaged acraglass .
i hope some of this info comes in useful . good luck with your project , cheers

Thanks big rich i used one shot as a release agent it works really well and being in a spray can makes it almost imposible to miss any nooks and hidden places. Two or so coats and its all done ready to go.

Did the same thing with the action to prevent any unecessary contact with bedding compound to help with the clean up.

Yes mate lock down sux im currently in the process of pulling down all my rifles and prepping them for long term storage. I dont know when the next time that I'll shoot them will be and i dont want to find them in 6 months with light surface rust.

And yes mate the good old 222 she's the scalpel in the safe not much gets away from her and to date i think she's taken more than any other rifle in my colection.

Hey there Marksman ill be using Devcon 10110 for the beddibg job first impressions mate it seems like great stuff. I have used the match bedding compound by Nathan Foster before and thought I'd give the devcon a go.

Not to say that I didn't like the foster bedding compound just thought I'd give the devcon a go end result mate i can't tell the two appart.

Whilst the Decon 10110 mixed well the one thing that set it appart from the Foster bedding compond was the viscosity the devcon was a little on the thick side and whilst it did flow when placed in the stock it was a little thick for my liking.

The foster bedding compound however you can pour into the stock and is propably a little easier to work with.

I placed the rife into the stock and slowly applied gentle pressure to the action to seat the rifle using some strech tubing I tied the rifle to the stock and left it to dry for 24 hours.

After around 2 hours i returned to the rifle to trim the excess Devcon away to ease the clean up process and at this point all appeared to be as it should have been.

Personally i would have liked to get the rifle action loosly bolted in with the action screws however i didn't want to chance damaging either the bolts or the action as the thread for these is i think off the top of my head 3/16 x 26bsf and not something ive had and luck finding.

the devcon has a peanut butter consistency and the use by label is telling you the truth
its a good idea to heat the job a little before sitting it into the devcon,
if you want to get the devcon a bit runny put the devcon container into another container of hot water before mixing but as soon as cold hits it it gets thicker
jb's is more of a liquid and is done more the way you have set this one up
l'm sure it will turn out fine though, its just a bit different how it works
