Cost to flute a barrel

Post by beerd » 13 Mar 2014, 10:37 am

Anyone have any idea what it costs to flute and existing barrel?

Just curious for a ballpark figure, doesn't have to be an actual quote or anything...

Best estimate?

I know one gunsmith that charges $80 per flute, but that's in a new match barrel. I'm not sure they would touch a hammer forged factory barrel because of issues with the stress it causes and the difficulty of straightening it afterward.

You'd also have to add the cost of labour to strip the rifle and remove and replace the barrel.

It would have to be cheaper to just buy a factory fluted barrel for a lot of them right?

Yeah, not cheap.

6 flutes is about normal right? $480 you're looking at :(

Yeah, probably cost about that to buy a new factory barrel and put it on.

Sell your original one and get half the money back even maybe?

(just guesstimating)

4, 6, 8... Depends on the barrel.

Larger calibre = larger barrel = more flutes possible.

My brother inlaw just got both his tikka varmints done 6 flutes per barrel plus re blued $200 each.

Total Solutions Engineerig in Brisbane. He also got the barrels docked to 20" and the bolts spiral fluted.

Should look good when finished.

More than its worth. If you want a light barrel buy a sporter if you want a heavy one get a varmint. Flutes are the “best of both worlds” or the worst? heavier than a sporter but still stiffer, lighter than a varmint but not quite as stiff. Only benefit may be cooling time. But still it will heat up quicker than a varmint and Slower than a sporter. Its a compromise between the two the only noticable real world benefit is aesthetics..

Old thread I know, but I rang Sprinter firearms for a quote yesterday and was told $160 per barrel,as many flutes as I want within reason, including rebluing.
Buggered if I know why you'd pay the prices previously quoted in this thread....
