Barrel crown types and re-crowning an existing barrel

Post by creet » 27 Mar 2014, 1:21 pm

G'day,

Can someone tell me, when re-crowning an old rifle is it important to match the original crown type of the barrel?

Could a change potentially degrade its accuracy?

Or cause a non-serious change like just a change in POI?

Thanks.

If you're crown is in such bad shape that you're redoing it, a fresh crown could only be an improvement.

Whatever style you went with.

I can't say I'm convinced different crowns to anything significant TBH.

If it doesn't have any faults, it will do the job.

For changing the crown itself I would say no.

Shortening the barrel as a result of re-crowning though, a change is definitely possible.

Not necessarily a bad thing though.

You might get a POI change but accuracy could remain the same.

If you're shooting hand loads your accuracy could change, and you might need to tune the load .1 or .2 grain to match it to the new barrel length.

Or it might just do nothing...

Thanks all.

Going to have a go at re-crowning an old clunker myself. Thought I'd try a few different crowning bits if there was anything to be gained but I don't think I'll bother :)

There are a few videos on YouTube on how to do it at home. Larry Potterfield has a go with a battery drill

Nearly as good as doing it on a lathe as well old Larry reckons.

Only cost you a handful of coin for the bits to give it a try anyway.

Thanks yoshie, weepy.

That's the plan. I don't have a workshop so it's going to be with hand tools :)

A good ball bearing lapped crown is better than one done badly on a lathe.

I'm usually not too bad with this stuff so fingers crossed.

The state this muzzle is in at the moment though anyway... I couldn't make it worse if I tried so it'll be an improvement either way
