And now for something different - I made a Matchlock

Post by LawrenceA » 30 Jan 2021, 8:27 pm

Not sure where Else I would put this nor am I sure anyone on this forum would be interested.
After some months talking to the QLD weapons licensing branch I got a path to build myself a matchlock musket.
The barrel is from an Iver Johnson shotgun,
The stock was made from an English Walnut stock blank.
The rest was made from bar stock.
I added sights today and still need to do some adjustments as the hammer is not placing the match as consistently as I would like and a few others bits.

Calibre is 62 barrel length is 27"
Weight is not much. I am pleased with myself.

That sets the bar high for all of us DIY'ers. Awesome work mate.
The pen may be mightier than the sword, but personally I prefer the .30/30 Winchester.

Cool as, It would be very interesting to hear what you had to do to get it all happening legally.
Sounds like your persistence paid off.

DAMMIT! Another one I need in my life! Good job that!
There's still a few of Wile. E Coyote's ideas that I haven't tried yet.

The "legal" part interests me especially. Did you have to hire a lawyer, cost a lot of money?
Very interesting project and I'll bet it's hours of fun

Yeah it was a learning curve.
Legal aspect ended up petty simple.
In QLD only a licenced armorer can manufacture a firearm.
I talked to Weapons Lisencing and sort of said so if I do it this way it will be OK?
Eventually I got a yes.
Muzzle loaders are an enigma and a law unto themselves within firearms use and production.
In this case of this the drilling of the touch hole is what made it a firearm. The gunsmith insisted on doing a little more but that is the crux of it.
He got the touch hole wrong but it is acceptable.
No gunsmiths seem to know anything about muzzleloaders.
One well placed shot is all it takes.

Hell Yeah!
Has some boot with 85ffg and a 352grain ball.
Quite mild with 65gr ffg
1oz of #6's in front of 85grains is a decent load too.
One well placed shot is all it takes.
