Ebay trigger jobs

Post by crys » 31 Mar 2014, 6:10 pm

Anyone bought a trigger job of ebay?

You send them your trigger, they do the work, they send it back. That's the gig.

I see a bunch of blokes are selling them now, about $60 seems to be the going rate. Heaps cheaper than your average smith AFAIK.

Obviously a few concerns about safety and quality of work though just shipping it off to some random you know nothing about.

Thoughts?

He's got thousands of good rep so I guess that's a good sign.

Glen Coughlan has a really good reputation, you can't go wrong.....plus the fact that he'll reset the weight of pull on it afterwards for the price on the postage...

All for trigger work though?

That would be the only thing that would make me consider it.

Just my 2c, but personally I'm not keen on sending any part which makes my rifle go bang off to some random ebay address.

There is always the option of getting an adjustable trigger from the factory or an after market one from a reputable brand. If you're shopping for a new rifle look at options with factory adjustable triggers.

Save yourself the concern/trouble all round or shipping bits off.

Not like you're going to swap out a perfectly good rifle and go through that expense/time though for the sake of a $60 trigger job.

Probably not practical for most to get a different rifle with adjustable trigger.

If you're not comfortable with ebay and can't do it yourself... Only option is to bite the bullet and give it to your LGS gunsmith.

Sorry to go a bit off-topic.

With a factory trigger, how well set are they from the factory?

Are they usually pretty good or need some adjustment?

Depends...

My Tikka has a nice clean break. Wasn't what you'd call heavy from the factory, but I lightened the trigger pull a bit. Only personal preference really, nothing to complain about. That's all you can adjust on the Tikka.

The trigger on my Anschütz was woeful out of the box. Seriously terrible...

Quite heavy, and tonnes of creep. Both adjustable and once I'd done that it's great. Feather light and super crisp.

You'd never use it like it was out of the box though...

To be expected though, as they would set them very conservatively for safety and liability reasons.

Don't know if it's all for trigger work, but I suspect it would be. That's what he's known for.

FWIW, he does a great job, and gets it back to you in no time.

He did my 30-06 and my son's 223. I'll be sending him my 204 trigger to do after Easter also.

Both of them are beautiful now, although probably too light at about 1.5 lbs. Fantastic for targets, but too light for hunting. I plan to adjust them soon.

Highly recommend him. Just send it Registered Post or Express Post and you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

Yep, there is something written in the manual to that effect. Set for 'optimal safety' and you're expected to adjust it yourself if you want a different pull.

All in the name of liability I'm sure.

It dead set was terrible out of the box though. Moderate weight, but with a few mm trigger creep.

Personally I reckon they could do well to set closer to how shooters will actually want it.

It's a greater trigger to use once it's set up, but anyone cycling one in a shop for the first time can't know that. If you didn't know any better which I guess most people don't, it just seems like it has a crap trigger.

I have the same rifle and it wasn't the best but I also have the 1712 Anschutz with the 2 stage trigger and it was F$%^&King Awesome outta the box!

Amazing what a extra $1,200 bucks gets you!

I'm going to buy the sporter stock for my 1416 so I can swap between bench and hunting without needing another rifle.

Not eager to know what it costs

I know Glen personally and I can tell you he's a gunsmith by trade and specialised in Triggers (he does Triggers full time now from what he told me) - he does a lot of Jewell triggers and other fancy triggers for benchrest shooters who want even more from their triggers, he's done all my Howa rifles (3).

Would I recommend him - you bet if you want your Howa/Weatherby or any of the others he mentions in his ad to perform the way they should I say go for it, no need to spend $100's on a new trigger when most of them can be made to be very good with a bit of smithing by someone who knows how to do it right.

I've used this guy and he does an outstanding job. I bought a new mossberg maverick .308 rifle with a plastic stock and terrible trigger for $350 and it shot about 2 inch groups. Bought a boyds stock and bedded it and started shooting about 1 inch groups. Gave my trigger to Glen Coughlan (ebay trigger guy) to be worked on. Turn around was only a couple of days. He got rid of the creep and reduced the pull weight. Now I shoot 1/4 inch groups at 100m just using factory remington corlokt 150gn. He's not on ebay anymore but his details can be found on Facebook. Just follow his instructions and you can't go wrong.
