Latest muzzleloader build

Post by LawrenceA » 24 Jul 2021, 2:41 pm

I know you guys aren't into this but I am tickled pink with my latest build so I thought I would share.
For what it is worth made heaps of mistakes and heaps of fixes.
It is modelled off one of Davy Crockett's guns from York County.
It is a 50 cal flintlock.
No surprise the stock is curly Maple
Yes it is fully registered and was bought as a box of components. Not a kit persay as the work to get them to go together is lengthy.
It has probably taken a couple of hundred hours but who is keeping track?

Not my type of shooting, but I certainly can appreciate a fellow shooters effort. Great looking piece of kit. Enjoy it. :)

I'm into it ... awesome job, it looks fantastic.

I'd be keen to hear how you went about the legalities of it all. I'd love to build one myself.

G'day LawranceA,
Of the first 4 rifles I bought, 2 were muzzle loaders including 1 Kentucky rifle, a 45 caplock, Your flintlock is just marvelous!! Are you going to brown the metalwork? Cheers.

Thanks all
This one is an early gun so browning was not used. Most likely a new firearm would have been charcoal blued or left in the white so in the white it is.
Browning came later.
One well placed shot is all it takes.

I'd be keen to hear how you went about the legalities of it all. I'd love to build one myself.

Basically I was in QLD at the time and got permission to import the parts but needed to get the gunsmith to "manufacture" the firearm.
This entailed doing the serial number etcetera and drilling the touch hole.
Now I am in NSW the process looks more difficult and I am still working through it.
Fingers crossed I can start another in a few months.

LLLlllggghhh (wipes drool) That sure is purdy?! BP is very nearly all I shoot these days.
There's still a few of Wile. E Coyote's ideas that I haven't tried yet.

Ok, I think I vaguely remember reading that in another thread, I bet you feel it was all worth the effort now you have it done

It surely is to me too!
Problem is I no longer have the access I did and still have guns to sight in.
Think I might try and regulate the double rifle after I sight this and the matchlock in.

If interested here is a more detailed rundown of the project.

Nothing fancy. An old CVA Express in 50 cal which is a muzzleloader. I really like my muzzleloaders.........

The type without the adjustment between the barrels so I am going to use the old style method of adjusting the muzzle with a stone/file.
One well placed shot is all it takes.

They are damn heavy
Wouldn't want to lug one around very far.
Cool toy though.
I have an original 14g which I have hunted with and used round ball in. Nice light, very versatile.
Was hoping to get an early Pedersoli 12g or the new 10g.
Both under 6lbs I here.
This is the old 14g
