What to seal stock inlet with?

Post by scrolllock » 07 Apr 2014, 9:42 am

I've properly floated a walnut stock/barrel myself (sand paper and timber dowl) and obviously taken what little sealant there was in the inlet off in the process.

I want to seal it up again against potential moisture.

Any recommendations on what to use?

I was pretty generous with the space around the barrel, so spray on or brushing something a bit thicker on will both work.

Cheers.

Any good oil finish should work on Walnut for you.

Easiest things probably get some spray adhesive/sealant stuff.

Best way to get a thin, even layer instead of schlacking something on with a brush.

Previously I have just masked off the stock (proper masking tape like the green or blue Scotch one that spraypainters use so you knwo if won't wreck the finish) and then sprayed the inlet and barrel channel heavily with pressure pack clear of any variety.

Any acrylic sealant will do to be honest...

You just want something that's thin enough you can lay down a neat layer.

Not something like painting on silicon from your caulking gun

That's exactly what I've done in the past.

A run of masking tape all around, and two light coats.

Thanks guys.

Just regarding the spray paint, no problems with that flexing or cracking a little with stock swelling or use?

Er, not spray paint. Spray clear coat I meant.

Circling back to the acrylic sealant I mentioned, they're a little flexible when dried so this wouldn't be a problem.

Not arguing either way, just FYI.

All good.

I ended up getting a marine-coat that the guy at the store talking up.

Waterproof of course and a little flexible like you suggested.

Went on nice and thin too. Basically can't see it's there except for a shine in the right light.

The expansion and contraction of your stock is less than pretty much anything else that we paint. Heavy coat of 2K , or single pack urethane, or anything else that sets and is waterproof (geez brush on Araldite lol) will do.

All you are trying to do is prevent moisture going in and out of the raw wood.

(Which makes me wonder why the hell factory wood stocks have raw wood in the inlet area, for the sake of 1min masking and 10 cents of cheap oil or varnish...? I have seen some with a great external finish and raw wood inside. Shoddy)

Should be all good though ;)
