Homemade ply wood stock

Post by bear foot bowhunter » 22 Apr 2014, 1:05 pm

Hi guys and gals.

I was wondering if any one has done this?

I was surfing the web for info on building my one stock to save some moola and stumbled across this. One guy made a ply wood core and fibre-glassed it the other was strait ply with steel or alloy pillars.

Any thoughts or tips.

Any help much appreciated

It is a nightmare making a stock from scratch.

But ply is the best thing to practice on as it is cheap for when you stuff it up, and inletting is way easier as you have lines to follow.

Definitely go for it though!

That's how laminated stocked are made. You need to use quality materials and have a level of workmanship to finish with a product worthy of the time and effort.

Have a look at the Boyd's website and see if you think you could save yourself money. They sell in oz for around $250

I sort of figger that it wouldnt be to much different to a laminated stock but just worry about overall strength . but I suppose any thing is better than the hoge stocks that come on the rifles today

I'm a bit out of the whole carpentry thing now but I always used Titebond III glue in the past.

Seriously strong stuff. I had a few bits of furniture repairs that were years later broken down to be disposed off. The wood would shatter before the glue did in taking them apart.

Oh and it's water proof too which is obviously good for outdoor use.

I've been chipping away at a gunstock blank myself the last couple of weeks.

I don't get to give it much time but it's getting there :D

I'd definitely say get enough stuff to do a practice run first.

I'm learning via all sorts of mistakes on my first one ;)

I'd definitely do something above and beyond straight plywood.

Without a suitable sealant it won't last too long as raw wood.

As Mark Tac said it can be a nightmare but it is very satisfying, I have made three for target rifles(two pillar bedded and the third block bedded) out of wood and a laminated one for a Savage .22 will be next.

The big thing is patience, wood is very easy to work with but you can't put it back on.

Unless you are doing a practise run, the most used plywood for a quality product is AS/NZS 2272 Marine Plywood - Hoop Pine. Use specific glues recommended by the manufacturer to laminate sheets and finishing products especially sealers. Oil based sealer or stain is not recommended as it tends to swell the laminates of ply.

Plenty of information available from the manufacturers like Austral Plywoods.

Quality Marine Plywood isn't cheap by any means.

Be careful using imported plywoods as they in general do not even meet minimal standards.

Dig your camera out and start clicking! Pics of progress and even the failures would be great - so we can all learn.

I have a plan to make one for my young daughter.

Earlier this year I got an unfinished boyds stock and did the inletting to suit my old Model 12 Lithgow - worked well and am now pillar bedding it. the one for the daughter is so that she can shoot something with a length of pull suited for her.

I will carve it out, inlet and bed it then give it a coat of paint (pink of course) - as it is only for a 22, the normal bunnings ply will do and the undercoat and top coats should provide adequate protection / sealing of the ply.

Even if it turns out crap, it will be a good little project. Best of luck with yours - just get in and do it.

That'll be great for her to have one that fits her.

Have noticed that about a few of the 'youth' rifles is that they seem to be built for teens (adult size) anyway. Maybe an inch less on the stock, but not really what I'd say is 'youth' size for introducing kids to shooting.

Just started the project with cutting the first ply template -the daughter is happy with the look of it so far - here is the first photo - I will post more as I go (and also info on glues, sealers, top coats etc)

I was just going to copy the blaster but I thought that apart from being a but rude (and illegal / immoral etc) I would combine aspects of different designs to make one that fits best.

You're not exactly ripping off their design commercially.

I'm sure they'll survive one person taking some inspiration for a personal project ;)

Progress slowly being made.

Laminated three lots of ply together to get the required thickness and did a little more shaping. I will get the sanding disk on the angle grinder once I have inlet the stock and really take to it to get the shaper right.

As I am planning to shape away a large portion of the but area of the stock, I glued in some aluminium flat bar in a cut out in the centre section of ply. Unfortunately in my enthusiasm I didn't take any photos...

Once the shape is finished and since the stock will be painted (in the daughters favorite shade of pink) I will go over the timber with a body filler and sand it back to a finish suitable for painting.

I suggested it and she thought it was a great idea.

She also wants me to develop a range of ammo that "shoots sparkles" out of the barrel - the love heart will do for now I think.

One for the girls, a mates wife used to load pink confetti into random shotshells in his bag(with the shot as well) looked good.

That was also how they found out who was knocking club ammo off.
