Pillar bedded it last night and will do some final shaping and putty in advance of sanding and sealing before the paint. I am making a base plate and trigger guard out of Aluminium and will paint these to match the rifle. Probably 2 weeks work left in it - all going well.

I will post further photos as it progresses towards the end of the build.

Total cost to date:
Ply wood - $0 - left over from home project
Wood glue - $5
Bedding pillar - $12 - half of a kit from Atlas works I used on another project
Paint and putty - $18 - Super cheap auto have spray on auto body putty suitable for use on wood
Therapy and daughter "warm fuzzy" - priceless!

Following is a photo of the pillar bedding including the resin bedding of the hold down screw for the lithgow.
Aluminium pillar was from Atlas works in Perth and the bedding compound is Devcon steel epoxy.

The barrel / action was coated with neutral nugget shoe polish to stop the epoxy sticking to the barrel. PVC tape and plasticine was used to dam up the epoxy in certain areas. The overflow was trimmed using a dremel tool.

Next on the list is to make the bottom metal (trigger guard and magazine surround) and then putty the stock in preparation for sanding. For the bottom metal I am using aluminium extrusions and for the puttying, I will be using spray on automotive putty. This will make it easier to get the final shape and produce a smooth surface on the cheap plywood base.

LMFAO.

I bet that gave the ^$%&&$ a shock when it fired in front of all the other club members.

Love to hear talking his way out of that

Spray putty sealed and bogged ready for final sanding before painting.

Making the bottom metal from aluminium and trigger guard will be integrated into the stock.
Photos following are:
- bogged ready to sand
- Bottom metal (will be painted to match stock)

Norton,

This was my second try at inletting (first was on a Boyds stock - should have done things the other way around...) came out OK but would have been better if I had a drill press to use. Fit was reasonably snug with a few run outs due to poor dremel control occurring - fixed up with body filler and bedding the action.

Overall reasonably happy with the bbl free floated and no movement in the pillar and epoxy bedded action.

Final putty and fitting the bottom metal and trigger guard last night - helped to cover up some of the misalignment from the lack of drill press - I will post another photo after the final sand and before the first top coat.

Isn't that what you call "PINK MIST" ?????????????
 :D

Just for interest sake, when doing woodwork and wanting good strength, I use "Bondcrete"

I knew a chippie that was doing a job in a hurry just before knock off time.
He stirred the Bondcrete with a bit of timber, then dropped it on the floor.
Next day when he was cleaning up after the job, he went to pick up the stick, and it had glued itself to the floor.
I guess that's why the manufacturers must've named it that.
He put an extra grunt into it and up came the stick,, with a piece of concrete floor attached to it.
I do not fear death itself... Only its inopportune timing!
I've come to realize that,,,,, the two most loving, loyal, and trustworthy females in my entire life were both canines.

I painted my plywood Mossberg KB shotgun stock with fiberglass resin then sanded and camo painted it in 1996 and its still doing the job.
There's still a few of Wile. E Coyote's ideas that I haven't tried yet.

You can download the guide here.

Thanks to Dale for taking the time and sharing.

To the OP, BearFootBowman.

If you haven't already got the gear and started, order a laminated blank from Boyds in the US and go from there. It will cost you as much (or less) than a sheet of structural ply and glue from Bunnings. It will be easier on your tools and much easier to work accurately than glues together bits of ply. End product will be much better all 'round.

From memory Boydes blanks will cost about $100 with postage ($45 for blank). Structural ply will be about $70 for a sheet, plus glue, plus too much time working with inappropriate material, plus time sharpening tools all the time because the glues aren't made to be worked like that......

You get the picture.

Good luck with the project!
Cheers

edit: just checked date of OP... probably too late for any advise now. :geek:

Harper,
Very Happy - also very impatient - according to her, I should take a day or so off work to get it finished for her - at least she has her priorities right - shooting before work!

If i can get hold of the right "sparkles" I should be able to give it a test run later this week or some time next week. Once it is all together I will post the finished article.

Photos of finished stock and assembled rifle - My daughter is nicknamed "Squeaker" hence the "Squeakinator" on the stock.

Things I would do different:
1. start off with better quality ply
2. Find a better quality but pad
3. Learn how to use body filler better for an improved surface finish

Daughter is happy so it cant be too bad.

Yeah, she is over the moon. We should be taking it out to the range on Sunday - the club captain will spew ("guns aren't meant to be pink") and one of the lady shooters already wants her hubby to do something similar for her.
No to think of the next project - maybe a silhouette specific stock for my CZ......
