Serial number scratched into Ruger bolt

Post by pmomd » 22 Apr 2014, 7:09 pm

A mate just brought this to my attention after reading it somewhere.

I have a Ruger and look at my bolt, there is what's clearly a hand scribbled engraving of the serial on there...

It's not deep, not causing any problems I'm sure and I've had the rifle for ages without issue.

Just wondered why the serial is on the bolt in such a crappy way?

Looks like someone in a rush just knocked it out with a crappy home engraver or something. Is that the norm?

Never owned a Ruger but by the description you have made and seen a number of other brands I'd say it's lightly engraved.

Some have it stamped on the bolt handle, some very nicely engraved. I would believe that once assembled the firearm is matched with a bolt out of a collection that gives it the required standard for headspace then identified to that firearm.

Yeah my Ruger has the same crappily engraved serial number on the bolt . It kind of looks like it was done by a preschooler :/

Ditto.

Had two Ruger's in the past, both with scribbled serials on the bolt.

Both new, can't tell you what the story is though.

Just checked also, my Tikka and Anschütz both don't have the serial on the bolt as far as I can see?

So yeah...

Don't quote me on this, but I think it's do do with some state regulations requiring that bolts be serialised.

QLD I think requires bolts to have serials on them? Other states maybe too, dunno. No such requirement in the USA though, so they are added here as required.

Maybe you guns you fellas got originally came via a QLD dealer? Or they were engraved to allow for this in case that's where they ended up.

That's the info I got anyway.

It won't affect your shooting.

As long as it matches the rifle so you don't have any confusion with the fuzz I wouldn't worry about it.

I have two Rugers and yeah, the serial number is engraved (and I use the term loosely) on the bolt.
It's like they were engraved while being chased up the assembly line.
It must be just how they choose to do it.

I have quite a few rifles with the serial no. engraved in the underside of the bolt handle, pretty sure its just a "this bolt goes with that type deal" no biggy either way.

Nothing on your bolts Westy?

(It's possible I have the state wrong, not QLD perhaps?)
