Ok,I did solve this in the end. As a couple of people suggested but I didn't check till recently, the rear action screw was protruding into the raceway ever so slightly. I filed about 1mm off of it and it APPEARS to have fixed the problem

You have found and resolved a particular flaw in the firearm but I doubt you have truly established whether that was the cause of the firing pin problem.
My presumption is that you have an ex military or typical commercial M98 which has a 1/2" firing pin travel.
So even if the cocking piece was dragging on the protruding rear screw there would be at least 3/8" of unrestrained firing pin travel which would be more than enough to ignite the primer.
If yours is a Zastava or FN commercial action then they have a 3/8' firing pin travel so it could then possibly be a contributory issue.

that's where i'd be looking then. Try a no-go gauge, and maybe you're bumping your shoulders too much.

As i said,headspace was checked and adjusted,by a gunsmith even !
