Don't know him, but have had work done at a few guys here in VIC.

Where about you located?

What work are you getting done?

Might have another suggestion?

Mentioned in another topic here.

Fluting is about $80 per flute. That's for the milling, not colouring.

Cost to flute a barrel

I live in Tassie and I will be getting Luke to build mine in VIC as mentioned .

He does great work and has built many rifles of friends from vic and all shoot great.

Why would you want to send your guns away when you have great smiths over there on your back door step :o

Chief I am waiting for my barrels at this moment, waiting time from order was to be 18 to 20 weeks.

He might have some barrels on the way who knows or he might be getting a barrel out of Aust or NZ .

What cal are you going for and what barrel profile as I know where there are a thew barrels in Aust.

I know i am way too late but YES. I have used him for a number of jobs.

His work is excellent, his rates are reasonable and his turn around is quick. Two rifles he put together for me both shoot well under 0.5moa with tuned hand loads.

Highly recommended. Why wait months when Rolf will likely turn your job around in no time. He is professional and does a hell of a lot of repair work for Tassie gun shops. His quick turn around is not because he is not busy but because he is good and professional. It is his job and not just a sideline or hobby.

Like Gwion, I'm a bit late here too! I live four states away from Rolf Hey but he has done a lot of work for me.
Why? Because I'm fussy, Rolf works with me to build what I want and his work is very good!

sungazer wrote:But what work did he do? There are gunsmiths that just do the metal work and are experts in their field. Then there are the experts in the woodworking field. To wait 20 weeks for a barrel to be threaded, chambered, crowned and fitted is ludicrous. Unless that is the time from placing an order to obtain a barrel from overseas. The work I mentioned costs about $300 from an expert so reverse math it and you can tell it doesn't take that long. I have had them turned around in a week, mind you that was queue jumping.

He outsources his stock work to a specialist. He will turn most jobs around in 2 weeks or less. Everything i have had him do for me he has had done in less than a week after all parts were on hand. One small job i got an email that it was done the day after it was dropped off.

Work he has done for me:
- Recrown and fix firinf sustem issues on old Sportco: turnaround same day.
- True Zastava action, fit barrel with barrel off Howa varmint including rechamber/re-tenon/crown: turnaround 1week, result the thing puts 5 rounds into under 2" at 300yds with 50gn z-max bullets and me on a trigger that needs to be worked.
- True Howa action and fit Truflite barrel (as above): turnaround 2 weeks (week after the Zasty was done), result, the thing puts 5 rounds into 0.3" at 100yd with me on the trigger.
- Refit iron sights to old Sportco: turnaround same day.

I get confused when people are sending their work away and saying it is going to take months to get it done because the "smith is busy". Anyway. He is good, affordable and quick. What more do you want!?! End of story.

I imported the NIB rifle pictured above only to discover it was basically unserviceable :o
Rolf re-built it from scratch using parts supplied by the manufacturer and after market. When all the modifications were complete, he re-finished the whole thing - Turn around, including shipping was less than four weeks.
He has done everything for me from simple repairs and modifications to stock re-finishing and complete builds - All completed in a timely fashion, great value for money and (most important from my point of view) his work ALWAYS functions as it should!
