Jewelling your own bolt - What could go wrong?

Post by roob » 13 May 2014, 11:31 am

G'day,

I'm keen DIY jewel the bolt of my rifle.

Haven't done this before. What should I look out for?

Is it possible to damage or ruin my bolt doing this?

Thanks.

I'd suggest you practice on a length of pipe (or something similar in size and shape to a bolt) just to get the process down before the real thing. be sure to keep swarf out of the bolt inner workings (whatever it's called).

^^^^ There is no swarf, just left over paste to wash off. The bolt is stripped anway so not hard to wash it out.

Taking off too much metal would be a real concern.

There must be a good how-to on this but short version = take off as little as required so as not to weaken the bolt at all.

Yeah, I've found a few guides suggesting that but nothing as to how much actually is too much.

A couple of practice runs on a pipe tomorrow I think.
