Help needed to remove "synthetic rubber" stain

Post by Die Judicii » 09 Apr 2023, 1:34 am

I have a Ruger American 300 Blackout with the olive green synthetic stock.
The problem has arisen whereby the black (presumably) "synthetic rubber" inserts of my rifle grips/holder has suddenly deteriorated.
Now, when I slip a rifle into it, it leaves sticky black mark on the stock.
With timber stocks it comes off with the rub of a cleaning cloth and a little detergent.

But not off the Ruger synthetic stock.
Normally I would try Eucalyptus oil,,,,,, but I know that "eats" a lot of these type plastics.

Any suggestions welcomed for a non damaging solution to my problem.

Thanks in advance. :unknown: :problem:

Euc oil is what i was goin to suggest but failing that in a small test area there is stuff like acetone or rubbing alcohol or hairspray or (goo off ). The name is possibly incorrect spelling.... u csn buy it at bunnings . Or petrol. Unfortunately all these products are potentially damaging to surfaces .

How simple,,,,,, thanks Laz,,,, the turps did the trick without eating into the plastic or softening the surface.
I'd already tried detergent, and Metho with zero results and was reluctant to try other more aggressive stuff.
And, I hadn't thought of trying turps. :drinks:

Second problem is fixing the grips, but I do not know how to fix rubber when it is stuffed, as I have had no luck with it. Anything I have tried is only a temporary measure.

That's simple Mate,,,,,,,, Throw em out.
These particular ones are only used to hold a rifle while I go up the ladder and step onto my platform, so I might see if I can simply cut the offending rubber out altogether and just keep the basic fingers.
