However,, for the life of me I cannot figure why a manufacturer would go to the length of changing/retooling,,,, to produce a specific rifle/chambering that would/could have been catered for,,,,,, to take both rounds in the one action length,,, in the past.

I run the 80gn ELDM at 2850fps, and that's not at all a heavy load. It would be pretty hot if I had to seat it down to 2.340" or 2.260" though. ADI's COAL is 2.550" which is .100" more than I can fit in the Ruger, so I see pressure a little sooner than their load data. It's about 400-500fps less than the .243 pushes 80gn bullets so it's pretty respectable - I would think 3000fps would be achievable if I wanted to run it hot. The very high BC of these long bullets makes up for the reduced muzzle velocity when you extend the range though. The 80gn has .485BC versus .255BC for the 55gn VMax. Launched at 2850fps and 3300fps, by 225m both are down to 2400fps, but the 55gn is drifting 175mm in a 10mph wind while the 80gn is drifting 105mm. From 225m onwards the 80gn is ahead. By 400m the 80gn is making 2080fps, the 55gn is down to 1810fps, and it goes downhill from there - I'll take the heavier bullet every time, especially if there is wind.
