Cerakote-like dips you can do at home?

Post by banoob » 26 Jun 2014, 7:30 pm

I guess it wont be 100% as a pro job, but is there anything like Cerakote you can do DIY as an at home project?

I dunno the tech behind the proper stuff like electro plating or whatever else, but for the ones where they just dip and bake is there a home equivalent?

Just for some fun projects, not actually for doing my own rifle.

Thanks.

Yes you can do it at home. Brownells sells kits for it. I havent done it myself, but I assume you could get the kits in Australia.

there are plenty of spray and bake products out there, like this stuff

Just for the record Cerakote is sprayed on.

I have seen the dipping process you talk about but cant remember what its called.

None of them are cheap or easy.

Cerakote is either air cure (easy) or the 2pak baked one (much harder, needs a big oven. I know, cos I just spent a long while making a big oven!!) The air cure one is not as durable - nowhere near the 2pak one.

The main thing is the sandblasting and degreasing with meticulous cleanliness. Then, being able to spray really damn evenly. It is a costly process to do by trial and error. The solvents used are also really nasty, this in NOT like usig rattlecans from Bunnings and holding your breath.

If you want to have a go, I'd recommend the air cure Cerakote (C-series) and a Preval disposable sprayer. They give a lovely even pattern (especially if you waste the first 1/4 of the can (say 20sec spray) to get the pressure down a tiny bit.)

Then it is a $80 experiment, not hundreds of $$$

For your sake, puhhlease use a resirator with an organic vapour filter.

Thanks for the video, that's great. I found a couple of sprays listed for sale but no pictures of the results or instructions so no idea how they come out but those look good.

I dunno the name of the dipping one either. I've just seen there is a dipping coat so I could be a complete different think.

Cerakote sprayed on though... Got it. I think I'm game.

$80 I can do.

I should be good with the protective gear, have an ex-panel beater mate with the masks and all that.

I had a BIG name business Cerakote my rifle and even they didn't do a perfect job, there are some very thin / transparent spots on the bolt and some small parts were lost in the process..... professionals hey ?

Given the right size blasting media and a oven hot enough and big enough I'm sure I could easily do a equal or better job.

But the rifle still looks good imo. And the finish is what I needed... tough, durable, rust proof and maintenance free.

I wouldn't be too critical - it is very very thin, like water but runnier lol, so it will not cover say a black bit and a silver bit the same plus it is hard to apply well.
