What grease for my rifle bolt?

How do you make it stay where you want it? Doesn't it just "fall off" and in that make even more mess as it collects somewhere in the action where you don't want it to be?

I was just wondering this. Seems like it would all just collect in the bottom of the bolt?

Buy some and try some, its not expensive. Think you will get a little surprised. It's also awesome on locks. Puff a little in the key hole.

i have to admit, i'm leaning towards the castrol moly grease. if i buy a tub of that stuff it will last me a lifetime.

i know purists will say buy the one made for rifles not cars, but does anyone have some detail on the risks of using the castrol moly compared to a purpose 'designed' grease? i tried google but there was nothing to find.

i'm not that experienced with rifles, but for other interests/products i often come across re-branding being the only difference... so i'm always sceptical about marketing! lol

I reckon it will be fine to use Peter, just don't go over using any lube, just a light smear is all that's really needed and don't forget the back of the lugs either, less is more.

My mechanic was nice enough to give me a tub with 2 inches of grease left in it after I asked.

Been getting my car done there for a while and got the mates favour for it.

Maybe try the same if you can?

The only place "Grease" should be in a Firearm is on the "Locking Lugs" at the rear or for those that replace / switch barrels on the thread BUT in both circumstances it is just a smear.

The grease for locking lugs should be what is classified as "high pressure grease" in other words like what's use in wheel bearings not chassis grease.

Moly / Graphite High Pressure grease is fine.

You should know how to clean not only the rifle bore but the action and you need to clean your bolt. Apply a very light coat of gun oil to protect against corrosion and a smear of grease to the rear of the locking lugs.

Hello,

I've come to prefer Lucas engine assembly lube (prevents dry starts!) That stuff never comes off and works really well with a very thin film.

I use this on my pistol slides as well. If you consider it, every automatic cycle of a semi-automatic pistol is a "dry start".

I use an oil, tetra spray on stuff. It's bloody awesome. 2 quick sprays and it lasts a month or so

Hey buddy, I'd recommend molybdenum disulfide, easiest way is to grab a aerosol can of "molybond".

Clean your bolt down and wipe it dry, then spray on a nice even coat on the body (not the face) of the bolt.

Any dry film lubricant will probably work but I've run tests on this product with a group of assault rifles and it stood up to 1000's of rounds of rapid fire with good results.

I'd avoid a silicone based spray though, could spell disaster if you ever try and cerakote your rifle.

I haven't used the Penrite brand specifically but that's the right stuff.

Like I said, I only went with the Castrol because a mechanic mate gave me the tub, not because it's specifically better for any reason.

Lots of opinions on grease on bolts, and as in any internet subject there is a bit of sheeple effect. With my Target rifles I always grease the backs of the lugs and the cocking cams as these are subject to wear and lots of rounds. However after 4783 rounds my mates rifles has suffered only minimal wear(read a bit of polishing) and is still firm on the GO guage.

You can draw your own conclusions, but he has only ever kept the bolt clean and lightly oiled with Inox oil.

I suppose it could be said that if you keep the firearm clean and oiled and inadvertently forget to grease the sky won't fall in anytime soon, often the lugs need to wear in a little anyway or knock some of the machining irregularities off, many gunsmiths lap them in.

By all means grease lugs but make sure you also regularly clean that area out as grease plus grit equal grinding paste and that is something most people would wish to avoid.

If you are a hunter and get rubbish in your gear regularly then a good clean and oil may well suffice(this is all I do) especially if you full length size or use factory loads as the strain when loading and extracting is often minimal.

We have brains and should use them, just my humble opinions.

Oh and I hate moly or graphite grease as the ****** gets everywhere. I save it for the double cardian and swivel joints on the Hilux, I only use Wynn's Supreme(as I have for 20 plus years on anything subject to extreme wear).

how do you guys clean the lug area inside the action? i've tried to stick my finger in wrapped in some cotton material, but find it very hard to clean effectively. its not really dirty, as i take good care of the rifle, but i'm sure there is a better more efficient way to do it ?
maybe a spray solution with pipe extender would be a better way to approach it?

Pete, you can buy special little brushes designed for cleaning the chamber / locking lugs. Like little tooth brushes with brissle's on the side. BRT for one.

I don't like moly or graphite grease either, it's too dirty if you get it on things. As I said earlier, high presure / extreme grease is all that is required and a very small amount at that like a tiny dab on a cotton bud. I like the tubes like seringe that you can squeeze a tiny amount out of the end and smear it with it's own tip. Saves
a lot of mess and easy to carry in the cleaning kit.
