Recoil pad gone to goo

Post by scrolllock » 21 Jul 2014, 6:27 pm

I dunno what my mate's done but he got his Remington out at the range for the first time in a few weeks and the recoil pad has gone to goo.

It still has some body, but a few mm of the surface is shot and just touching it some tacky gunk comes off on your finger.

Same for the carpet in his gun safe.

What's he done wrong? Ideas?

I store all my firearms muzzle down. Anything in the barrel just runs out onto a towel on the floor of my safe instead into my action, trigger and all over the stock and butt.
Now that's been said, who's coming for a shot?

Yeah. If it's suddenly turned he's gotten something on it he shouldn't have.

Solvent is a common one.

If he hasn't used the rifle in a long time it might be due to the rubber deteriorating. I've seen it happen to a few people who had brand new work boots sitting in the cupboard for a year and the soles fell apart

Looks like everyone was right.

He went a bit overboard when wiping the rifle down and stored it stock down and it got a few runs on it.

Time for a limb saver I guess.

Wasn't Inox was it? I know that can have an affect on Rubber.

Better anything runs towards the muzzle than towards the action and stock.

I know people argue back and forth on this. Muzzle down is what I suggest.

Fair enough mate, I stand em up like gun shops do, been doing it that way for 35yrs now with no dramas, I do know of one fella who used to point em down until he found his SS Tikka had corrosion around the Muzzle which required the Muzzle to be cut and recrowned (can't remember exactly how it all came about).

Cheers

No worries mate, would be interesting to find out what he's been using so others can avoid the same issues.

cheers

Have a look at the link below and right down the bottom of the page you will see a little warning notice about using Inox long term on "Natural" Rubber.

http://www.inoxmx.com/inox-mx3-for-firearms/

It's great stuff to use and I use it and Lanox all the time on my firearms and haven't run into any issue using it - I can highly recommend it and its a darn sight cheaper than the "Gun Lubes" that are out there and way over priced for what they are IMO.

Dont know if its related but if you ever get engine oil on a set of HT leads and let it stand the same thing happens...must be something in oil that destroys rubber

Yep, it happens with rubber in general.

Not exclusive to recoil pads.
