Cleaning rods

Post by sneaker » 26 Jul 2014, 10:43 pm

G'day,

What's the advice for good cleaning rods?

I got given a breakdown one so have been using it but it's a pain in the ass to put together and down again TBH.

Good brands?

I see some are plastic coated or just steel. What's the way to go?

What do you want to clean?

I originally got a carbon fibre Gunslick rod to suit a .22 but it feels like I'm jamming it in. I didn't really want to go overboard with cleaning and learn the hard way...

I'm now using a one-piece Dewey stainless steel .20 CAL rod, a Possum Hollow bore guide and some small square patches for my .22. I just clean the .22 and run some oil patches down it before putting it away for a couple of months.

The "this product may cause cancer" disclaimer on rods/oils is always encouraging...

I use the Tipton carbon fibre rods. Got one for 22 and one 30 cal. The part where you thread your jags on is brass so it won't damage your bore if you accidentally line it up wrong when inserting the rod (bore guides are a great idea for avoiding this).

About the only complaint I have is the 22 cal rod is a bit whippy so if you're putting it into a tight bore it can flex and feel like you're putting a lot of force on it.

I've been using a Pro-Shot one piece rod.

Was abut $45 or something?

I dunno... Does the job, no complaints, wasn't too much. That's everything right?

I'm using Pro Shot rods too.

They've been fine for all my barrels.

Here is their pitch.

Pro-Shot Cleaning Rods are manufactured by Pro-Shot with American Made exclusive spec Stainless Steel and have a proprietary mirrorlike jeweled finish. A Pro-Shot rod is more dense and hardened due to added steps in our rod manufacturing processes. It is still slightly less hard than barrel steel.

Each rod is carefully hand crafted and micro polished in addition to our centerless grind and polishing steps.

The hardened dense jeweled mirrorlike finish of our rods does not pick up and carry abrasive grit, dirt, or fouling through the bore. This makes the Pro-Shot micro-polished rod the best type of gun cleaning rod available in the market.

I've read people say they're worried because they looked scratched but that's the idea.

Better to wear the rod than the barrel with a harder rod.

Those screw together rods are the worst...

You'll be glad you got a fixed one.

I won't used them either.

Feels like I'm clattering the joints down all the rifling as you push it through :?

I made the mistake of trying one recently...

Couldn't stop the thing jagging all up and down the barrel when pushing the patch through.

Just glad I got given it instead of paying for it. From another shooting who didn't like using it

That's a cable though right? Not a rigid rod you have to push through first anyway?
