Timber finish recommendations anyone ???

Post by Die Judicii » 13 Sep 2014, 1:10 pm

Hi all,

I am about to embark on a refinishing job on a project rifle.

The original stock is French Walnut, and has a ding approx. 12mm x 5mm x 2mm deep at its deepest.

Other than that it has a few scratches and some very tiny dings.

It has also unfortunately had a small piece broken out at the top side of the pistol grip that has been glued back in place.

It seems to have been fitted in place well, but the glue line is still visible.

I suspect that it may also have had some type of filler used with the glueing process, that may or may not accept stain.

This is an old firearm, and I want it to finish up looking close to original as best I can, without spending an absolute fortune.

What finishes could be used and recommended,,, ie: Oil or Satin Estapol etc ?

Many thanks in advance

Oil.

No doubt you'll try to steam the dings out too... ;)

Steam dings out, sand, finish with 0000 grade steel wool and then Tru-Oil

Simple as it sounds really.

You fill the dent with water and iron over it with a cloth in place to protect the wood.

The dent absorbs and expands and you can hopefully raise the dent out of the surface then sand it flush again.

The finish usually isn't perfect but it can be a big improvement.

I'm with 1290. Oil.

Nothing better looking that than deep , dark French Walnut when it's restored and looking pretty.
