Screw on barrel possible? To turn a pistol into a rifle?

Crackpot idea time :D

Forget legalities, just curious if it can be done.

Could they make a pistol in a hunting calibre like 44mag with a pistol length barrel. But then with an additional screw on length of barrel to turn it into a "rifle"?

Possible?

why not....

Problem would be the alignment of the rifling. The extension part would probably need a leade in the rifling so the bullets dont impact the fall height of rifling.

You would need to consider the rigidity or the barrel after cutting / extending it and how to screw together maintaining concentricity.

BTW, the 44RemMag is more a pistol round that can be used for hunting...

why not just remove the short barrel and fit the long barrel? the 2 piece barrel is not a good idea for many reasons

I dunno? Why not?

I'm not a gunsmith, if I knew the answers I wouldn't be asking

I guess I was just picturing something simpler, like a screw on suppressor.

Not needing tools or a whole extra barrel to do it.

You'd never get the rifling to work on a quickly removable system like that.

Interchangeable barrels are already a solution to what you're asking, like Chronos said.

Overlooking the obvious answer here too...

If not for our stupid laws you'd just carry your rifle and a sidearm like they do in the states.

That would be better and less effort than any of the above options.

I have a rifle, with a custom lightweight alloy, stock which uses the Remington XP-100 pistol action.

It has screw in barrels, one chambered for 22PPC and one for 6mmPPC. The case is the same for both of these barrels, so the bolt is also the same, only the neck diameter is different.

Takes about 5 minutes to make the change, No realignment or other corrections are necessary.

The XP-100 originally had a 10" screw in barrel. Conversion back to the pistol would take me about 10-15 minutes and requires refitting a trigger extension rod.

I should have added that the XP-100 conversion is now registered as a rifle and therefore it is not legal to convert back to a pistol.

Thanks for the answers guys.

I'm picturing something that's just not gunna happen I think.

That XP-100 sure is an interesting shooter though.

Yes, although this kit is no longer made and one imagines not worth the paperwork in Australia, converts 1911 to .308:

Or if you want it in 50BMG:
