Making custom hand mold on existing stock - help/feedback

Post by nords » 25 Sep 2014, 3:30 pm

G'day,

I have a project gun at the moment I want to do a few smithing experiments on, an idea I have is for a custom hand mould on the grip.

My idea on how to do it is chisel away some of the existing grip then use some sort of putty which will set rock hard and schlack it on the grip before squeezing it to make the mould. After it sets clear it up and voila?

What do you think?

My father used to shoot the "Free Pistol" event (at state level) and his pistol had a "custom" grip made from some kind of plastic wood that he put on it then squeezed it with his hand to shape. That pistol fitted no one else but him. A visit to Bunnings wood filler aisle might be the go for you.
There's still a few of Wile. E Coyote's ideas that I haven't tried yet.

(Shellys needit) does the trick, couple of options steel wood etc, comes I a cylinder in a two pack form you simply cut off amount required mix it together workable like thick play dough mould and leave to set, can be sanded drilled painted etc, good stuff a project rifle must, even had friend use as bedding compound and worked a treat.

I was thinking of doing something like this to my Boyds Thumbhole Stock, wrap the grip area in cling wrap or spray some sort of silicon or other release agent then use plastersine and make a reverse mould of some sort using sand.

there are lots of diff ways to achieve it, just a matter of having a look at what's available and going from there I guess.

I look forward to seeing how it comes out.

I've just got a tube of that today.

Going to do a practice knife handle first as a go.

One of the kitchen knives will be sacrificed for the greater good!
