Action mounted on JUST action screws and recoil lug

Forget the whole picture of turning this into a usable rifle for the moment, just focusing on this one point for an idea...

Say you had a flat bar of metal with two holes for the action, you sit the action down on top and screw it in so it's only held at those two contact points - There is no surrounding stock, no rear of the inletting to absorb some impact, it's just the 2 screws and the base.

Could a rifle work well mounted like that or does it need the inletting supporting it really?

Probably depends on the action, a lot of actions are machined out of round stock for the purpose of reducing material waste during machining, keeping costs down. How well would a round action on a flat plate resist the torque and stress of firing? The action may want to roll in the opposite direction of barrel rifling as well as want to pivot left and right when the round us fired

Some factory hunting guns have accuracy issues due to poor bedding, why would you consider reducing action stability further?

There are target stocks that use a V- block meaning the action is pulled down into the block stopping it rolling and twisting under stress. That's a much better idea

There is a series where guys put a match rifle on a bit of 2x4 and still get good accuracy out of it.

Anyone know the link?

It's amazing what you can cobble together but will it hold zero next month , next year even . I think not . The gun in that video is basically a barrel block style . I don't think it has any action screws. hence all the barrel tape . Sitting the action just on the screws would be prone to movement .

If I was to make my own stock, that probably the best I could manage. I would've used zip ties tho.

With a box of ties and some cutters you could call them quick release ties ;)
